Israel Icek Kristal (also Yisrael Kristal ; born September 15, 1903 in Maleniec near Żarnów , Weichselland , Russian Empire ; died August 11, 2017 in Haifa ) was a Polish-Israeli confectioner and supercentenarian . He became the oldest living man in 2016 and the oldest known Holocaust survivor in 2014 .

Life

Israel Kristal grew up in an Orthodox family. His mother died in 1910, his father, Moses David Kristal, was drafted during World War I in 1914 and died as a Russian soldier in 1919. Kristal was an orphan at an early age. In 1918 he went to Łódź and worked in his relatives' sugar confectionery shop. He married in 1928 and had two children.

After the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in 1939, he was imprisoned by the Germans in the Litzmannstadt ghetto . His children died in the ghetto, his wife and he were deported to Auschwitz concentration camp when the ghetto was dissolved in 1944 , where his wife was murdered. When Auschwitz was liberated in January 1945, Kristal only weighed 36 kilograms.

After the liberation Kristal returned to Łódź and married his second wife in 1947. With her he had a son, a daughter, nine grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren. In 1950 the family moved to Israel on the Kommemiyut ship . In Haifa he worked again as a confectioner. In 1952 he began making candies in the Sar and Kristal factory on Shivat Zion Street. After the factory closed in 1970, he manufactured his goods from home until his retirement.

After more records were found in Poland, his year of birth is considered certain, and Kristal was listed in the Guinness Book of Records in March 2016 as the oldest man living at the time . He was also the oldest known survivor of the Holocaust since 2014.

Kristal died in August 2017, five weeks before he would turn 114.
