In the attack in Stockholm on April 7, 2017 , an assassin drove a stolen truck into a pedestrian zone in central Stockholm . Five people were killed and fourteen others injured, some seriously. The Uzbek perpetrator claimed responsibility for the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization . He was sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism and murder .

Sequence of events

Shortly before 3 p.m., the perpetrator stole a truck in front of a restaurant on Adolf Fredriks Kyrkogata street . He drove through Drottninggatan , a pedestrian street in downtown Stockholm, into a window of the Åhléns City department store in the Norrmalm district ; there the truck came to a stop. The perpetrator then fled on foot on the S-Bahn and drove towards Stockholm / Arlanda Airport .

The truck was stolen while the truck driver was unloading it.

Victim

Five people were killed: an 11-year-old girl from Stockholm , a woman from Ljungskile , a 41-year-old British man living in Stockholm and a 31-year-old Belgian woman who was a tourist in Stockholm. A seriously injured woman from Trollhättan died on April 28th. Fifteen other passers-by were injured.

Investigations

On the evening of the crime, the police announced the search for a suspect and published a picture of the suspect from a video surveillance system . Reich Police Chief Dan Eliasson said it was unclear whether it was an individual act or whether further actions should be expected. At around 8:30 p.m., the suspect was arrested in Märsta north of Stockholm. Another man with alleged links to the suspect was arrested in Stockholm's Hjulsta district in Spånga-Tensta district on the night of April 8th.

Perpetrator

The 39-year-old perpetrator Rakhmat Akilow comes from Samarqand in south-eastern Uzbekistan . He is said to have been in Sweden since October 2014 and applied for asylum a month later . The immigration authorities ( Migrationsverket ) rejected the application in June 2016. His appeal was rejected in September 2016 and the authorities decided to expel him in February 2017 . Akilov went into hiding and the police wrote him out to be wanted. He was noticed by the domestic intelligence service ( Säkerhetspolisen ) in 2016 in connection with illegal financing of the Islamic State (IS) and was considered to be a marginal figure.

According to the police, Akilov has great sympathy for extremist organizations, including IS and Hizb ut-Tahrir . Many of his contacts in social networks belong to the Islamic Movement Uzbekistan .

At the trial before the judge on April 11, Akilov reported through his lawyer that he confessed to the crime. Akilov was taken into custody.

A week after the attack, doubts arose about the suspect's identity. So he had appeared within Sweden with two different identities, Rakhmat Akilow and Rachmantjon Kurbonow . In 2015, according to press reports , a Rakhmat Akilov attempted to travel to Syria from Sweden via Uzbekistan to join the IS terrorist organization. But he was picked up by security forces and sent back to Sweden.

judgment

On June 7, 2018, Akilov was sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism and murder and (in the case of early release) to life expulsion, the maximum sentence. In addition, he has to pay damages to victims and their surviving dependents totaling almost 14 million Swedish kronor (approx. € 1.3 million). Akilow had testified about his motive during the trial that he wanted to use the attack to get Sweden to end its fight against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
