Trollhättan is a city and an important industrial location in the western Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and in the historic province of Västergötland .

Trollhättan is located 75 km north of Gothenburg , 10 km south of Vänersborg and 25 km east of Uddevalla . The city is the capital of the municipality of the same name . A small part (5 hectares without inhabitants, 2015) of the crime scene is on the territory of the neighboring municipality of Vänersborg to the north .

economy

Well-known local companies are GKN Aerospace Sweden , National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB ( Saab Automobile ), Saab ( mechanical engineering and aircraft industry), HP as well as production studios for films ( Dogville , Dancer in the Dark and Kim Novak never bathed in the Sea of Galilee originated here) . The film production has given the city the joking name "Trollywood". There is also an important electrochemical industry and the University West .

The Saab automobile plant and development center are on the outskirts. There is also a car museum with many historical Saab models on the site of the former Nohab works. The power supply is provided by the Hojum and Olidan hydropower plants on the 32-meter-high Trollhättan Falls on the Göta älv , Sweden's most water-rich river. The Trollhätte Canal leads shipping traffic around the falls.

In the 18th century, the inventor and entrepreneur Christopher Polhem tried unsuccessfully to tame the waterfalls. A functioning lock staircase could not be installed until 1800. The old locks of Trollhättan can be visited about two kilometers south of the waterfalls . The New Locks, which are used for shipping today, are also nearby. The Trollhättan Falls are dry most of the time, as the water is now passed through power plant turbines.

In the months of May, June and September the gates to the waterfalls are opened once a week (Saturday 3:00 p.m.), in the months of July and August once a day (3:00 p.m.) to show onlookers the violence of the water currents. In addition, the gates need to be opened from time to time if the water level in Vänern has to be lowered.

Attractions

The church of Trollhättan, which is right next to the waterfalls , is built in the neo-Gothic style and was inaugurated in 1862. The architect was Wilhelm Edelsvärd . The construction was financed with funds from the canal company and was a donation to the Trollhättan community.

A visit to the Trollhätte Canal Museum is interesting. It's near the upper lock. Here you get good insights into the history of the canal.

The stone box of Sjökullen ( Swedish Hällkista i Sjökullen ) is located in Upphärad in the municipality of Trollhättan.
