Lennart Bengtsson (born July 5, 1935 in Trollhättan ) is a Swedish climatologist , meteorologist , retired professor and, among other things, former director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg .

Life

Bengtsson studied meteorology at Uppsala University , where he graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science and in 1959 with a Master of Science . During his work as a research assistant at the university from 1961 to 1965, he received his doctorate in 1964 as a Doctor of Philosophy ( phil. Lic. ).

From 1965 to 1974 Bengtsson was department head at the Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut (SMHI), then until 1975 interim member of the planning group for the establishment of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (EZMW), where he was deputy director and research director from 1976 to 1981 and subsequently Was director until 1990. From 1979 he was also an associate professor (lecturer) at Stockholm University, and in 1990 he received an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University.

In 1991 he became director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg and at the same time "Scientific Member" of the Max Planck Society. In 2000 he retired. In 2001 he was appointed professor at the UK University of Reading . Since 2009 he has been director of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) and since 2009 visiting lecturer at Uppsala University.

Bengtsson has received several international awards. He lectures at established research centers and universities in Europe, the United States, Canada, China and Japan and works internationally with numerous scientists. He is married and has three children.

Significant memberships

Bengtsson has been a member of Academia Europaea since 1989 , honorary member of Svenska Meteorologiska Sällskapet (SMS) since 1991 , member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1993, member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1995 and member of the Finnish Academy since 1998 of the sciences . He was a fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) from 1999 and was elected honorary member in 2007.

Membership is also in the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors (GDNÄ), in the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) and a fellow membership in the Royal Meteorological Society .

At the beginning of May 2014 he joined the Academic Advisory Board of the “ climate-skepticalGlobal Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), which takes a position against the UN Climate Council Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). A week later he withdrew this decision and cited peer pressure on the international climate scene and the fear for his health and safety that it triggered as the reason for his departure.
