The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology ( MPI-M ) is an internationally recognized institute for climate research. The aim of the MPI-M is to understand how and why the climate on our earth is changing. The scientists study the susceptibility of the earth system to disturbances such as changes in the composition of its atmosphere, and explore the fundamentals and limits of the earth system's predictability. To this end, the MPI-M develops and analyzes highly complex earth system models that simulate the processes in the atmosphere, on land and in the ocean.

The MPI-M and the University of Hamburg, together with other non-university institutions, form the CliSAP Cluster of Excellence , a competence and training center for climate research in Hamburg.

organization

The institute consists of three departments and two independent research groups:

Departments

  • The "Atmosphere in the Earth System" department deals with atmospheric climate dynamics, especially with the interactions within the atmosphere (headed by Bjorn Stevens ).
  • The department "Land in the Earth System" examines the interactions between land, climate and humans (Head: Martin Claußen )
  • The "Ocean in the Earth System" department investigates the role of the ocean in climate dynamics (Head: Jochem Marotzke )

Independent research groups

  • Forestry in the Earth System
  • Turbulent mixing processes in the earth system

International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS)

The MPI for Meteorology is involved in the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modeling . The IMPRS is an English-language doctoral program that enables a structured doctorate. The University of Hamburg is also involved . The spokesman for the Research School is Jochem Marotzke.
