Bjorn Stevens

Bjorn Stevens (born April 19, 1966 in Augsburg , Germany ) is an American meteorologist and climate scientist . He heads the Department for Atmosphere in the Earth System at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and is a professor at the University of Hamburg .

Life

The son of a German and an American, Stevens grew up in various English-speaking countries and learned German later in his life. He received a bachelor 's and master' s degrees in electrical engineering from Iowa State University and his PhD in atmospheric science from Colorado State University in 1996 . From 2007 to 2011 he was "Full Professor" for dynamic meteorology at the University of California, Los Angeles , before moving to Hamburg.

Stevens is married and has two children.

Act

Stevens researches the role of aerosols , clouds and atmospheric convection in the climate system . He has made contributions to the understanding of cloud formation , the response of clouds to warming, and the response of radiative forcing to aerosol disturbances, which has contributed to a deeper understanding of climate change .

Stevens was one of the authors of the chapter on clouds and aerosols in the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC (2013/2014).
