Bounty - One will pay is an American action-thriller from director Ron Howard from the year 1996 and a remake of the movie kidnapping (Ransom!) In 1956. Mel Gibson plays the industrialist Tom Mullen, whose son is kidnapped. He uses the requested ransom amount as a bounty for catching the perpetrator. The film was shown on television under the title Bounty - One Must Pay! broadcast on VOX .

action

Tom Mullen is a wealthy airline owner and has a happy family life with his wife, Kate, and son, Sean. One day their son Sean is kidnapped in front of his parents. The kidnappers demand a $ 2 million ransom. Tom Mullen is surprised that the kidnappers are asking for "only" 2 million dollars, although they should know how rich Mullen actually is and that he could "pay this amount out of the postage", so to speak.

As the viewer quickly finds out, Detective Jimmy Shaker is the head of the kidnap gang. His girlfriend Maris Connor asks him why they wouldn't kill the boy right away, he was a constant danger to all of them. When a ransom is handed over, Tom is rushed across the city, at the destination point a money handover bursts due to the sudden appearance of the police. One of the kidnappers - Cubby Barnes - dies. He was the one who took pity on the boy, was the only one who cared about him and assumed that Sean shouldn't be killed.

Tom doesn't believe that the kidnappers really intend to release his son and makes a grave decision. When the money is handed over again, Tom tells the kidnapper "a small change of plan" and that the kidnapper should watch a certain TV channel. In a special broadcast Tom Mullen announces that he is now offering the $ 2 million as a bounty on the kidnapper, dead or alive. Tom's calculation goes so far that the kidnappers are overwhelmed by the situation and do not know how to behave now.

Despite opinions to the contrary, Tom maintains his refusal to pay ransom to the kidnappers; he even increases the bounty to $ 4 million. A dramatic telephone conversation ensues between Tom and Shaker, at the end of which a shot is fired. Kate and Tom are close to breakdown.

Shaker changes his plan and now wants to play as the liberator of little Sean. To achieve this goal, he kills the other two gang members and also his girlfriend Maris Connor with targeted shots and waits for the arriving police to sit next to Sean. He has a gunshot wound and is being evacuated. Released from the clinic, Shaker doesn't shy away from showing up at Tom Mullen's home and claiming his "reward". When Sean Mullen sees Shaker by chance without him noticing, his father Tom overhears his son freezing and urinating in his pants - apparently he recognized Shaker's voice. Mullen tries not to show anything and signs the check, albeit with the wrong signature. Shaker discovers this and threatens Mullen. After a battle of words between the men, in which Tom managed to convince Shaker to go to the bank together, there was a bitter showdown between Mullen and Shaker when leaving the bank building, at the end of which Shaker was shot.

Production and Background

The film was shot on locations in the states of New Jersey , New York , Connecticut and California . It is a co-production of Imagine Entertainment and Touchstone Pictures , who also published the film at the same time.

Mel Gibson underwent appendectomy while filming. Born in 1986, Brawley Nolte , who plays the role of Sean Mullen, is the son of actor Nick Nolte . Brawley Nolte was nominated for the 1997 Young Artist Award for his portrayal of the kidnapping victim.

The idea for this film adaptation was inspired by the film kidnapping ( Ransom! ) From 1956, the plot of which was conceived by Cyril Hume and Richard Maibaum . The script of that film is loosely based on the episode Fearful Decision from the dramatic television series The United States Steel Hour . The stars of the 1956 film adaptation were Glenn Ford , Donna Reed and Leslie Nielsen . The English original title of both films Ransom means neither kidnapping nor bounty , but ransom .

When Shaker calls Tom Mullen, he quotes from the classic science fiction novel The Time Machine by HG Wells . Shaker compares the poor people (to which he counts himself) as Morlocks and the rich like Mullen as Eloi .

Grossing results

The film grossed over $ 136 million in US theaters alone on a budget of around $ 80 million. In addition there are the worldwide exploitations, which hit with almost 310 million dollars. criticism

“An action film that is really exciting only in the last third, which is more interested in the appearance than in a credible description of behavior. He is questionable in his ideology of success and in the tendency to enforce his own law. "

“[…] Mel Gibson and Gary Sinise fight a bitter duel in Ron Howard's sweaty kidnapping drama. [...] So, despite some action scenes, 'Kopfgeld' is not a thriller in the conventional sense. It is a study of the human psyche. And if you have the right guide through your soul, brain and instinct on such an expedition, it is the most exciting trip in the world. "

“After various scandals, Gibson, who plays one of his best roles here, is now considered a box office poison: his last thriller comedy, 'Get the Gringo', didn't even make it to the cinema in the USA, despite very good reviews. Sweaty game of cat and mouse. "

"Gibson does an interesting performance by showing a man trying to get out of a crisis, and Sinise gives a good counterpart: Here are two men playing a deadly game."

- Roger Ebert (three out of four stars)
