In 1850, Herman Melville sought out the pension owner Thomas Nickerson to research his new book . This is the last survivor of the disaster around the whaling ship Essex . At Melville's urging, Nickerson tells him the story:

In 1820 Captain George Pollard and Petty Officer Owen Chase went whaling with the Essex crew. Shortly after leaving Nantucket , tensions arose between the inexperienced captain Pollard and the ambitious Chase, who had hoped for his first command of his own and made no secret of his dislike of the captain from an old whaling family who was in charge of him. After rather unsuccessful initial months in the overfished Atlantic with only one whale hunted, the crew is looking for luck on the traditional route in the Pacific. While taking provisions in Ecuador, they meet the captain of the Spanish whaler Santa-Maria . This reports on the offshore fishing grounds on the other side of the mainland, where the sperm whales regularly gather. Although there are tons of whales there, they are protected by a demonic white whale that destroyed his ship and killed six of its men. The Essex officers ignore the Spaniard's warnings and venture into the Central Pacific, driven by greed.

A large school of whales can actually be found 2,000 nautical miles west of Ecuador. Immediately the men set off on the hunt in the dinghies. But when they attack a whale cow with a calf, they are attacked by a huge sperm whale . This first rams one of the fishing boats and then turns directly against the Essex . This gets a list, leaks and then sinks after the surviving crew was able to load some supplies into the fishing boats for a short time. Chase's attempts to harpoon the attacking sperm whale fail. With no other options, the survivors set off on the long journey to South America in the temporary seaworthy fishing boats.

After a few weeks at sea, the survivors sift through land, starving and thirsty. Before they can reach the island, however, the whale attacks again, killing more men and seriously damaging the three boats. Some men manage to escape ashore. This is the barren Pitcairn Island of Henderson . The men soon realize that a permanent life on the island is not possible and set out again after the boats have been repaired. Four men remain, including the injured second mate Joy. After weeks of hardship at sea, the boats lose sight of each other. Before that, Chase refrains from killing the whale in a final confrontation, after which there are no more attacks. Driven by hunger, after more weeks at sea, both the crew of Chase's boat with the young Nickerson and that of Captain Pollard's boat turn to cannibalism . Ultimately, both boats are discovered by other ships and the men are saved. Besides Pollard, Chase and Nickerson, two other sailors survived. Of the men who remained on Henderson, three can later be rescued. There is no trace of the third boat.

Back in Nantucket there is a hearing. The ship's owners urge Chase and Pollard to downplay the incident and claim the ship has run aground. As soon as it became public that whales would attack the whalers, this would have unforeseeable consequences for ship insurance and whaling as a whole. Chase refuses from the start and renounces the captaincy offered him. Pollard appears to be cooperative at first, but then reveals the truth at the hearing. Pollard continues his whaling career, but loses another ship off Hawaii; Chase switches to the merchant marine.

Nickerson finished his story in 1850, and Melville now had enough material. With this he wrote the bestseller Moby-Dick .

background

The Essex was an American whaling sailing ship that was built of wood around 1800 and went whaling for 19 years. On its last voyage in the Pacific in 1820, a sperm whale rammed the ship and it sank. The survivors of the crew trying to reach Easter Island in the smaller fishing boats ran out of food, so they began to eat the dead. One of the few crew members who survived the accident, the chief mate of the ship Owen Chase , published the book Der Untergang der Essex in 1821 (original title: Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex, of Nantucket ). Even the novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville was inspired by this story. Melville had never met a member of the crew in real life, but only met the son of Owen Chase. From this he received his father's book. A year after Moby-Dick appeared , Melville also met then Captain George Pollard. On the basis of these stories and encounters, Nathaniel Philbrick created the novel for the film.

Filming began in September 2013 in London and Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire , England . In the further course of the shooting took place on the Canary Islands La Gomera , Lanzarote and on the coasts of smaller islands of the archipelago, so on the coast of Alegranza , an island off the north coast of Lanzarote, which part of the Chinijo archipelago and the marine reserve of La Graciosa is. The Charco de los Clicos, a green lagoon with a black beach on El Golfo in the south of the island, served as a further backdrop . On the Canarian beaches, the production designers covered the modern buildings and erected straw huts on the rocky beach.

For the storm scenes, the production team built a water tank at Leavesden Studios, where a deck was built on a gimbal bridge to mimic a raging storm. To achieve the correct effect, 500 gallons of icy water were introduced through the cannon openings on board. At one point during the shooting, the film crew was forced to retreat to their hotel because of a storm off the Canary Islands. The shooting was interrupted for a day and a half, but ended, as planned, after 73 days of shooting.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel , Chris Hemsworth said that in preparation for their roles as starving sailors, he and the rest of the crew had been placed on a diet of only 500-600 calories per day to help them gain weight to lose. Hemsworth himself had to drop his weight from 215 to 175 pounds in order to credibly play Owen Chase , which , according to the actor, has made Heart of the Sea the most physically and emotionally grueling film of his career.

Reviews

From the German Film and Media Review was the lake in the heart with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “All in all, Ron Howard's 'In the Heart of the Sea' is an extremely worth seeing and coherent film that combines a highly exciting story with psychological skills, remarkable 3D recordings and excellent actors - a mixture that is found in today's cinema stands out pleasantly from the monotony of superheroes and sequels and which actually reminds of the golden days of Hollywood. ". Matthias von Viereck from the Thüringische Landeszeitung is not very convinced of the performance, but is impressed by the visual aesthetics: “The director works with grandiose, photographed views that repeatedly focus on different perspectives, sometimes as if they were painted by a William Turner also the fragility of humans in the face of various forces of nature. "

Martin Schwickert from the Stuttgarter Zeitung points out the weaknesses of the film compared to the literary models: “'In the Heart of the Sea' does not succeed in stepping out of the footnote existence in the shadow of a much better classic. Compared to Gregory Peck's Ahab , Benjamin Walker's Pollard is a milk face. Neither the mystical nor the philosophical sub-text of the Moby Dick story want to unfold in this lavish but pale sea adventure. "David Hugendick from DIE ZEIT compares In the Heart of the Sea with the film Titanic , but refers to the beginning of the narrative framework, in which Melville knocked on Nickerson's door to hear the story of the disaster told, which reminds him very much of the shipwreck epic in which a survivor tells a story to the audience. Hugendick speaks of a “diminution of a myth” through the work of the director, who shrinks the abstract symbol of terror created by Melville back into a whale and thus demystifies the novel.

In the heart of the sea , 42 percent of the 223 critics at Rotten Tomatoes were able to convince (as of February 11, 2018).
