Ronald William Howard (born March 1, 1954 in Duncan , Oklahoma ) is an American actor , director and film producer and two-time Oscar winner .

Life

Ron Howard's father Rance Howard was of German descent and changed his surname from Beckenholdt to Howard. He was a well-known actor and frequently put Ron and his brother Clint Howard in child roles. For years he was referred to as Ronny Howard . He has been interested in filmmaking since his early youth. So he made smaller films with his father and siblings as actors, some of which have already received awards.

Howard played Opie Taylor with Andy Griffith (performed as Ronny Howard) early on in the Andy Griffith Show . Howard had his first success in the cinema in 1973 as an actor in the role of "Steve Bolander" in George Lucas ' cult film American Graffiti . He then starred in the hit sitcom Happy Days for years . In between he had a supporting supporting role in 1976 in the western The Last Sniper , which was also the last film with the US actor John Wayne .

His director career began in 1977 when he worked on the low-budget film Highway 101 . He then worked for a few years as a director on television series . Howard made his breakthrough in Hollywood in the early 1980s and has since directed many acclaimed productions. In 1986 he founded the production company Imagine Entertainment together with film producer Brian Grazer , with which he will henceforth produce his films. Audience successes and brilliant cinematic performances such as Splash , Willow and Backdraft established his current reputation as a great Hollywood director. The highlight of his career so far was winning two Oscars in the categories “ Best Director ” and “ Best Film ” for A Beautiful Mind - Genie und Wahnsinn . With The Missing , he presented an artistically remarkable attempt to re-examine the Western genre, which is both realistic and unsettling. His brother Clint Howard can often be seen in a supporting role in his films. In 2008 Howard was responsible for the film adaptation of Peter Morgan's play Frost / Nixon with Frank Langella in the role of Richard Nixon and Michael Sheen as the television presenter David Frost . The drama earned him again directing nominations for the Golden Globe Award and Oscar . Further film projects followed, including other literary adaptations.

In June 2017, in the middle of filming, he took over the direction of Solo: A Star Wars Story , which was released in 2018.

Howard has been married to the writer Cheryl Howard since 1975 and they have four children together. His daughter, Bryce Dallas, is also a film actress.

Since the film Nightshift - The Mortuary completely freaked out , he has worked almost exclusively with the film editor Mike Hill and his colleague Daniel P. Hanley . Salvatore Totino has been working as a regular cameraman since 2003 .

Howard plays himself in the 4th and 5th seasons of the television series Arrested Development .
