The Andy Griffith Show is an American television series produced by Desilu Productions (most recently Paramount Television) for CBS . Between 1960 and 1968, 249 episodes were created, spread over eight seasons. The show was among the top ten shows for all of its airtime.

The films take place in the fictional southern town of Mayberry, North Carolina , where Andy Griffith serves as the widowed sheriff . In addition to Sheriff Taylor, his son Opie ( Ron Howard ), the housekeeper and old maid Aunt Bee ( Frances Bavier ) and the incompetent Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife ( Don Knotts ) can be seen regularly in the series, as well as many - mostly weird and dumb - Minor characters. In total, the series won six Emmies , including five for Don Knotts.

The series remains very popular in the United States to this day and is still broadcast daily on US cable television.
