George Lindsey

George Lindsey (born December 17, 1928 in Fairfield , Alabama , † May 6, 2012 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American actor and screenwriter.

life and career

Lindsey was the son of a butcher. In 1952 he made at the Florence State Teachers College (now "University of North") his Bachelor of Science majoring in physical education and biology. He supported the football team at his school as a quarterback . After three years with the Air Force , he spent a year in high school as a baseball and basketball coach and history teacher near Huntsville , Alabama. In 1956 he moved to New York , took acting lessons at the American Theater Wing and in the following years started his career on Broadway in the musicals All American based on a book by Mel Brooks and Wonderfull Town , for which Leonard Bernstein composed the music. With his roles on Broadway, he was able to attract the attention of several producers in Los Angeles . When he auditioned for the role of Gomer Pyle in the US television series The Andy Griffith Show for the role of Gomer Pyle in 1960, Jim Nabors was preferred to him. It wasn't until 1964, when Nabors left the series, that Lindsey got his chance by playing Gomer Pyle's cousin Goober, the man in the hat. This role made him widely known, he impersonated Goober Pyle until the end of the series, which was discontinued in 1968 because the lead actor Andy Griffith left the series. Since some characters were taken over into the spin-off Mayberry RFD , including those of Goober Pyle, Lindsey played this character for three more seasons until the series ended in 1971. In the country show Hee Haw , which ran just like The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD on CBS , Lindsey took on the role of the popular character Goober Pyle again. Hee Haw was the longest running country music entertainment show in the United States. Was created Hee Haw , which reached in the US cult status, by Frank Peppiatt with John Aylesworth. With regard to his role in Hee Haw , the actor was also called "Doctor Goober" by friends.

Although that of "Goober Pyle" was his most famous role, Lindsey played in his long television career in other series, such as Smoking Colts , M * A * S * H , Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Twilight Zone . He was also heard in the original version in films like On the Highway again or as a spokesman for several Disney films, including Aristocats , Robin Hood and Bernard and Bianca - Die Mäusepolizei .

The actor also produced himself as a singer by releasing albums with country music. When asked about his career, Lindsey said in a 1985 interview that "he made America laugh, he wasn't the only one, but he helped make people laugh." In his spare time, the actor sponsored over for many years a golf tournament in Montgomery , Alabama that raised money for the mentally handicapped.

On May 6, 2012, George Lindsey died at the age of 83 after a lengthy illness in Nashville, where he had moved in early 1990.

Award

The University of North Alabama awarded Lindsey an honorary doctorate in 1992.
