West of Santa Fé (original title: The Rifleman ) is an American western series that was produced for ABC between 1958 and 1963 . From October 1969 to 1972 it was also shown in the evening program on ZDF and from 1985 on ORF .

John McLean is a sniper, Civil War veteran and widower who not only runs a ranch but also has to look after his son Fred . In the event of problems with bandits and Indians, McLean's rifle, a specially prepared Winchester, is used, which immediately releases the shot after the repeating process by means of a screw attached to the lever, so that rapid fire can be fired with it. McLean is supported by Marshal Torrance, the sheriff and the saloon owner Sweeney. The story is set in North Fork , New Mexico .

In the original version, John McLean's real name is Lucas McCain , and his son's name was also changed from Mark to Fred during the dubbing . Of the 169 episodes filmed in black and white , only 110 were shown on German television.

The series was conceived by Sam Peckinpah , who also wrote some scripts. The series is one of the most successful western series, along with Thousand Miles of Dust , Bonanza and Smoking Colts . Well-known actors like Sammy Davis Jr. , James Coburn , Leif Erickson , Dennis Hopper , Michael Landon , Dan Blocker and John Carradine made guest appearances. Well-known directors such as Richard Donner , Irwin Allen , Arthur Hiller , Budd Boetticher and Ted Post could be engaged for the series.

In 2004, the character of Lucas McCain was voted number 32 of the 50 best television series fathers of all time by the US magazine TV-Guide. On the tombstone of Chuck Connors is based on the title of the series The Rifleman . For the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the plot of the series served as a major source of inspiration.
