Arthur Hiller (director)
Arthur Hiller (born November 22, 1923 in Edmonton , Alberta , † August 17, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Canadian film director .
Life
Arthur Hiller first studied law and dropped out to work for television. He initially shot episodes of television series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents , Merciless City and Smoking Colts in the 1950s and 1960s. At the beginning of the 1960s he also began working for the cinema. His greatest success was the film Love Story . The bittersweet love story with Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw in the leading roles was the biggest box-office hit of 1970 and 1971. Hiller received an Oscar nomination for best director and won the Golden Globe Award .
In 1972 he won the Silver Bear with his film Hospital at the 22nd Berlinale .
Arthur Hiller was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1993 to 1997 , which presents the Academy Award every year . From 1989 to 1993 he was also chairman of the Directors Guild of America . In 2002 he received an honorary Oscar with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award .
Hiller left a daughter, Erica Hiller Carpenter, and a son, Henryk. His wife Gwen, whom he married in 1948, died in June 2016.
