Merciless City (Original Title: Naked City ) is an American crime series that was broadcast on ABC from 1958 to 1963 . The plot of the series was based on the 1948 Oscar- winning film City Without a Mask .

The focus of the series is on NYPD investigators at the 65th Police Station. The plot of individual episodes mostly focuses on the perpetrators and victims of the respective crimes. In particular, the scripts by Stirling Silliphant , in which dramatic elements were mixed with comedy, received positive feedback from critics in the episodes of the first season. As a result, a number of prominent guest actors could subsequently be engaged. The series was shot in the Bronx , near the Biograph Studios , where Naked City was produced, as well as in Greenwich Village and Manhattan .

In the United States , the first season aired on September 30, 1958 on ABC . The episodes started with a length of about 30 minutes. Due to poor audience numbers, the series was canceled after the first season. Thanks to a sponsor of the series and the production team, ABC was able to achieve a sequel. The episode length increased to about 60 minutes. The last episode aired on May 29, 1963.
In German-speaking countries, 39 episodes of the series were broadcast for the first time from March 1976 to October 1977 under the title 65. Revier New York by NDR . The remaining episodes were only dubbed on kabel eins in the early 1990s as part of a new edition of Naked City . It was broadcast from October 1992 to January 1993 under the name Merciless City .
