Paul Burke (born July 21, 1926 in New Orleans , † September 13, 2009 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Burke grew up in New Orleans, where his father Marty Burke, after retiring from boxing, worked as a nightclub owner and owner of Marty Burke’s restaurant in the French Quarter . Paul Burke moved to Hollywood in the late 1940s . He studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse for two years . In 1951, Burke received his first film role from director Lloyd Bacon , a friend of his father's: a small supporting role in the musical Call Me Mister with Betty Grable .

Since the 1950s, he had numerous guest roles in US television series , first in Big Town , Highway Patrol , Navy Log and Dragnet . 1956-1957 he played in the short-lived US television series Noah's Ark , in the season 1957/1958 he was seen in five episodes of the series Harbourmaster in the role of Jeff Kittridge .

Burke's most famous television roles were Detective Adam Flint in Merciless City from 1960–1963 and later Colonel Joe Gallagher at Twelve O'Clock High . In the 1980s he also had a recurring series role as Senator McVane in the soap opera The Denver Clan . In the late 1980s he took on guest roles again in the series Cagney & Lacey and Columbo .

For his role in Naked City , Burke received two Emmy nominations in the 1960s .

Burke also played in a number of movies , including Thomas Crown Unbelievable and The Valley of the Puppets .
