Diogo Gomes in Cape Verde

Diogo Gomes (* 1420 ; † 1502 ) was a Portuguese navigator, explorer and author.

Gomes began his career as a cavaleiro ( knight ) at the Portuguese court and was active in the state's customs sector in 1440 . In 1466 he was sent to the Sintra Court of Justice as a judge and was confirmed in this office on March 5, 1482. Gomes wrote a chronicle in Latin for the benefit of Martin Behaim , which later enjoyed great esteem. The focal point of his three-part stories were Henry the Navigator and his deeds for the discovery of unknown continents.

This chronicle is the only current source that describes the rediscovery of the Azores by the Europeans, in this case the Portuguese. In addition, Gomes faithfully represents the scientific and economic intentions of the Portuguese Prince Heinreich. Heinrich sent several caravels to find new land in the Atlantic Ocean . During the voyage of discovery, maps and quadrants were mainly used for better orientation, as did Gomes himself when he discovered Cape Verde .
