Equipped with numerous special powers, the “boss” chases criminals from a wheelchair from now on; he is assisted by Detective Sergeant Ed Brown ( Don Galloway ), Eve Whitfield ( Barbara Anderson ) and Mark Sanger ( Don Mitchell ).

Mark Sanger plays a special role: he was once taken to prison by Chief Ironside. However, since the boss thought he was an intelligent young man, Mark became something like Ironside's personal supervisor. So he wants to win Mark for the police service.

They have their headquarters in San Francisco .

In addition to this team and the premises, the boss also has a specially converted van available in which he drives to the operations.

Charisma

In Germany, the first episode was broadcast on July 25, 1969 on ARD . A total of 18 episodes were shown by May 1970 (17 from the first, one from the second season). The pilot film followed on May 1, 1971, the following year two double episodes from the second and third season. From January to July 1974, ARD finally showed 13 more episodes from seasons 5 to 7. RTL dubbed almost all the other episodes, forgetting two, but reworked the pilot film in a shortened version and the two long episodes as a two-parter. In 2006, The Fourth showed various episodes. The 200 episodes are usually about 50 minutes each, there are four double episodes.

In the FRG the broadcast has so far been as follows:

  • ARD: summer 1969-autumn 1980
  • Sat.1 : Second half of 1986
  • RTL (plus): beginning of 1988-end of 1993
  • SuperRTL : spring 1995-late summer 1996
  • The fourth: fall 2005-fall 2006

The revival episode The Boss Returns was filmed in 1993. That year Raymond Burr died.

The Ironside Truck

Ironside's vehicle was recreated as the Ironside Truck by Corgi around 1970 . Corgi's miniature version of the van had a hinged rear door behind which were the figures of the inspector and his assistant, Mark. A platform on which these two figures were attached could be pushed out of the vehicle interior, lowered like a lift , but not detached from the vehicle.

New edition

In 2013 a new edition of the series was produced with Ironside . Blair Underwood played the leading role here. After only a few episodes broadcast, the series was discontinued by NBC in October.
