Sido (real name Paul Hartmut "Siggi" Würdig ; born November 30, 1980 in East Berlin , GDR ) is a German rapper , music producer , songwriter and actor .

Sido is considered an all-rounder in the German hip-hop scene, as he has already tried his hand at various styles of rap, including: gangsta rap , pop rap , rap-rock , trap , comedy rap , battle rap or "rap ballads" . He is currently under contract with Urban / Universal Music . His stage name was of him as an abbreviation for " s uper- i ntelligentes D roe o interpreted pfer", earlier it stood for " S cheiße i n d a O hr" (one line Sidos from the Royal TS track Terroarr! ). Today Sido no longer has any meaning, but simply stands for Sido .

Sido is a member of the rap formations Alles ist die Sekt , Die Sekt and your favorite rappers . In 2004 he received broader attention for the first time with the single Mein Block and since then, together with Bushido, has been primarily responsible for the commercial establishment of the German-language ghetto rap as well as his former label Aggro Berlin . In the course of his career, Sido has sold over 5.7 million records and has won several awards, including an MTV Europe Music Award and 2 Echos .

Life

Sido on the day of the opening of his own tattoo studio in Berlin (2010)

Sido is the son of a Sintiza and a German, as he explained in some interviews (among others with the magazines Galore and tip ). In a bigFM interview, Sido said he was also one-eighth of Iranian origin.

Up to the age of nine he lived with his younger sister with his single mother in the East Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg . In 1988 the mother's application to leave the country was approved and she moved with the two children to West Berlin , where they lived briefly with asylum seekers in an emergency shelter in Wedding . After a nine-month stay in Lübeck , they returned to West Berlin and moved to the Märkisches Viertel , where Sido attended the Bettina-von-Arnim-Oberschule ( comprehensive school ).

Sido alluded to his son from a previous relationship in 2004 with lines like "I spoil my son with aggro" ( Aggro announcement No. 4 ) , on his second solo album I he dedicated the song A part of me to him . In response to criticism of his alleged musical “parenting style” towards a small child, he replied that his son liked music by the pop-rock group Juli and did not hear the part of his father's music that dealt with violence. He was temporarily engaged to the mother of their child, but the relationship broke up.

After five years of relationship, he got engaged to the former Nu Pagadi singer Doreen Steinert on February 14, 2010 , but the separation came before a wedding in spring 2012.

In summer 2012 he married the presenter Charlotte Würdig (née Engelhardt). Their first son was born on August 14, 2013, and in April 2016 they became parents of a son for the second time. The couple announced the split in March 2020.

Another child (* 1999/2000) comes - according to his own statement - from a short-term relationship.

Career

Musical career

The beginnings (1997-2003)

Sido at the Hiphop Open in Stuttgart (2003)

Worthy of his own admission started rapping for the first time at the age of 13, as he was impressed by the attention of the members of local school bands, but could neither sing nor play an instrument himself. He rapped his first texts in English , but then, according to his own account, quickly switched to German-language rap. In 1997, he joined as several other Berlin MCs often at open mic - Session of the Kreuzberg Kellerkneipe Royal Bunker on. Together with his childhood friend and temporary roommate Bobby Davis, who appeared as B-Tight , Würdig founded the rap duo Royal TS as Sido , with Royal standing for Royal Bunker and TS for Tight and Sido. At the same time, together with Royal TS Rhymin Simon and Vokalmatador founded the rap crew Die Sekte . About the resultant from the same Kellerkneipe hip-hop -Undergroundlabel Royalbunker Sido published in 1998 and 2000 with Royal TS demo tapes knowledge flow Talent and Back in Dissniss and 1999 The sect -Demotape Sintflows . In July 2000 the sect separated from Royal Bunker. According to Sidos later, the separation took place due to differences with the Royal Bunker managing director Marcus Staiger , whose main business focus, according to Der Sekt, was on the rap crew MOR, which was also under contract with Royal Bunker at the time, and in particular its member Kool Savas . DJ Tomekk presented SIDO to a wider audience for the first time. The two had been friends for a long time and made a dubplate of SIDO's ass fuck song and Tomekk played it in clubs across Germany. Specter was working as Art Director for Tomekk at the time.

At a concert in the Berlin freestyle cage G-Spot , Specter , one of the three future bosses of the then non-existent label Aggro Berlin , became aware of Die Sekte . Together with Halil Efe and Jens “Spaiche” Ihlenfeld, Specter then decided to found the label and sign Die Sekt . At the end of the contract negotiations, however, Vokalmatador and Rhymin Simon parted ways with Der Sekt because they did not want to compromise on the commercialization of their music together. Sido and B-Tight were then engaged as a duo as the first artists of the Aggro Berlin label and soon afterwards renamed themselves from Royal TS to Alles ist die Sekt, AidS for short .

Start of solo career (2003-2009)

After he had already contributed solo songs to the first label samplers from Aggro Berlin, of which the assfuck song , which appeared on Aggro Ansage No. 1 in 2002 , was the best known until then, Sido became the best known from the end of 2003 with the Christmas song of the label sampler Aggro Ansage No. 3 , whose Music video was shown regularly on German music television, specifically placed on the market by Aggro Berlin as a solo artist outside of AidS. Both of these songs were soon the focus of youth protection: They were submitted to the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People for examination because of misogynistic content , but not indexed. The video for the assfuck song was released with the age rating from 16 years ( FSK 16 ).

From publication of Christmas songs Sido was initially only a chrome skull mask whose skull simultaneously to the form of concerts and public appearances Shure - microphone was ajar. Aggro Berlins Specter designed these in 2002 based on the idea of B-Tights and Sidos, which were inspired by the US rapper Ghostface Killah , who appeared with a hockey mask at the beginning of his career. This was also the namesake for Sido's first solo album Mask , which was released at the end of April 2004 and reached number 3 in the German album charts. Part of the reason for the success of the album was the single Mein Block , released three weeks earlier , which Sido and Aggro Berlin made known to the general public. The song describes the (supposedly) ghetto-like social reality in a prefabricated building in the Berlin satellite town Märkisches Viertel ("MV"), which is known as a problematic settlement . Sido's album Maske sold over 180,000 copies and was awarded a gold record . The album was released by the single Fuffies im Club , which, like Mein Block, entered the top 20 in the charts. In addition, the assfuck song (with a slightly censored video) was officially released as a single for the first time, which gave Sido three singles at the same time in the charts. The third single on the album, Mama is proud , is a serious expression of Sido's gratitude for his mother ( only my mother has always stood behind me ), who speaks her words in it herself. On the occasion of the Bundesvision Song Contest in February 2005, in which Sido took third place for Berlin, he took off his mask in public for the first time since 2003 during the performance of Mama is proud . This appearance was the culmination of its increasing presence on television in the environment of Stefan Raab and his ProSieben telecast TV total . In March 2005 Sido took part in the Wok World Championships , also initiated by Raab .

In the course of 2005, Sido increasingly worked for individual collaborations with artists outside the German rap scene, including the British rapper Mike Skinner, a German version of Blinded by the Lights or the Polish rapper Gural. Together with the rapper Harris from the Berlin hip-hop duo Spezializtz , Sido also released the album Your Favorite Album as Duo Deine Favoriten Rapper in October 2005 . The only single on the album, Stand up again , caused a sensation because of its video, as Sido and Harris were crucified in the video. In an interview, Sido cited the reason for this appearance that he was a kind of "Jesus" for the German rap scene. Whenever there is something wrong with German rap, you see his face as the lead story. At the same time, he reacted to the indexing of his album Maske and three Aggro Announcement albums in autumn 2005, which, however, appeared in a modified version in April 2006 (as Maske X etc.). Get up again followed Sido's solo successes from the previous year with a top 100 ranking in 14th place. Your favorite album earned both artists their highest chart position at number 2 in the album charts. At the same time, the rapper's increasing success met with greater resistance in parts of the rapeseed scene for the first time. When performing at the hip-hop and reggae festival Splash! In 2005, Sido quit prematurely because he and Harris were booed by the audience and objects and food were thrown at them. In retrospect, Sido later described the performance as the "shitty performance of all time". The artists from Sido's label Aggro Berlin no longer appeared at the Splash Festival. After the label was closed, Sido was not in negotiations for a new appearance at the festival until the end of 2015.

At the end of 2006, Aggro Berlin released Sido's second solo album Ich , on which the duo Paul NZA and Marek Pompetzki, who are primarily responsible for the production of their future albums, took over the majority of all productions for the first time . After around 80,000 pre-orders, Ich was announced that 100,000 units had been sold two days after the publication, to be awarded a gold record. At the same time, Street Boy , A Part of Me and Bad Role Model, all singles achieved a top 20 position in the German single charts. With the same singles, Sido reached the single charts in Austria for the first time since Mein Block . Bad role model in particular was successful there with a top ranking of 18th place, remained his longest-placed title in the Austrian charts for five years and established Sido permanently as a solo artist in Austria.

On November 15, 2006, Sido published a biography entitled I want my song back . In the spring of 2007 Sido founded the label Sektenmuzik together with B-Tight , on which all members of Die Sekte were signed, and two months later published a compilation of previous collaborations with other artists called One Hand washes the Other (correct would be: "other" , capitalization is wrong). Above all, Sido drew attention to himself in 2007 through increasing TV presence, including several moderation appearances at Urban TRL or the award of the Comet music prize in Cologne as well as his work as a juror for the seventh season of the casting show Popstars , before he released his third Solo albums Me and My Mask first reached number 1 in the German album charts at the end of May 2008 . At the same time, Sido was awarded his first gold records for the album and was able to place his first top 10 single in the German charts with Augen auf / Halt dein Maul . In Switzerland, me and my mask even achieved platinum status and earned Sido a Swiss Music Award .

Musical reorientation (2009–2012)

Sido (2011)

After the closure of his longstanding label in April, Sido titled his fourth solo album, which was released on October 30, 2009, as Aggro Berlin . With a chart entry at number 5, Sido recorded its lowest ranking as a solo artist to date. As the artist's first solo album, it did not reach the sales limit for the award of a gold record in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. In comparison, the first album single Hey du! , in which Sido uses Maria's song from line 1 for the refrain sung in Berlin dialect . This tells of Sido's childhood in the GDR and then in West Berlin . For the first time in his career, Sido made his East Berlin origins public. As the figurehead of the West label Aggro Berlin , he had long made it a secret and spread that he was born in Berlin-Reinickendorf . In the song he reports that it wasn't exactly "cool" to originally come from the East and that he didn't want to be teased by his buddies. Hey Du reached number 4 in the German single charts and, after a total of six unsuccessful nominations in previous years, brought Sido his first echo in the Best Video category .

At the end of January 2010, Sido gave an unplugged concert in the Fontane-Haus cultural center in the Märkisches Viertel , which was recorded by MTV . Adel Tawil from Ich + Ich , Kurt Krömer , the hip-hop formation KIZ and Stephan Remmler from Trio took part in the concert . Sido is the seventh German artist and after the Fantastischen Vier the second German hip hop act to make an MTV Unplugged . The accompanying album was released in May 2010. The resulting single Der Himmel shall wait reached number 2 in the German charts and sold over 150,000 copies. The single Da Da Da - a cover version interpreted together with Stephan Remmler - also made it to the German single charts.

At the end of 2010, a song by the unknown punk band Fritzl's Töchter appeared on the Internet , which was promoted by the rapper and Sido confidante Liquit Walker . The suspicion quickly arose that the singer of the band was Sido himself. In addition, he had announced some time before that he wanted to make music with a punk band. A connection to Fritzl's daughters was denied. It wasn't until mid-2012 that Sido announced in an interview that he was part of the band. Although album-ready material is available, no publication is planned for the time being.

In 2011, Sido recorded an album entitled 23 with his long-time rival Bushido , which both released as a formation of the same name. Since this formation was not covered by Sido's contracts as a solo artist, 23 did not appear like Sido's last publications with the Universal Music Group , but via Sony . 23 achieved gold status in Austria in 2011 and Germany in 2012 and was particularly responsible for its two singles, the So I Do It , which was honored with an echo in the “Best Video” category, as well as the collaboration with Peter Maffay on being an adult in the public debate the two rappers ended up with Maffay, for media attention. At the same time, there were voices from the music business who, in view of the first major collaboration between the two most successful German rappers in previous years, had expected higher sales figures from the project in Germany and thus a faster award with a gold record.

On December 14, 2012, the best-of album #Beste was released , which, in addition to Sido's personal favorite songs, contained six previously unreleased tracks. The decoupling Bilder im Kopf became his most successful single to date and was awarded platinum in Germany . A DVD of his “Sido & Friends” concert from June 2012 in Vienna was also announced. However, this has not yet been published.

Regular single successes (2013-today)

On October 18, 2013, a video for the song 30-11-80 was released, the title track of his November 29 album. The numbers in the title represent Sido's date of birth. 18 other artists are represented in the almost eleven minute long track, which, according to Sido, means almost all of his “favorite rappers”. Two weeks before the album was released, the single one of these stones , a collaboration with Mark Forster , was released in advance . On November 29, 2013, a solo album of the same name was also released, which entered the German album charts at number 1 in the first week of sales. In addition to guest contributions of various German rappers were on 30-11-80 and Helge Schneider , Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Mark Forster represented. With one of these stones and love , two tracks on the album sold over 150,000 times each. A year later, Sido worked again with Forster as a guest on his single Au revoir . This song reached number 2 in the German charts as part of the 2014 World Cup and was awarded double platinum for over 600,000 units sold in Germany.

On August 14, 2015, Sido released the second pre-release from his album VI, the single Astronaut , a collaboration with singer Andreas Bourani . The single rose to number one in the German single charts immediately after its release and is Sido's first number one hit in Germany after eleven years of charting career . In total, Astronauts also sold over 800,000 times in Germany.

His seventh solo album Das goldene Album was released on November 18, 2016 . The album entered the German charts at number 2 on November 25, 2016 and stayed in the top 100 for 16 weeks.

On September 29, 2017 appeared along with Kool Savas the Kollaboalbum Royal Bunker . It entered the German charts at number one on October 6, 2017 and remained in the top 100 for 21 weeks.

On June 1, 2018, Sido released the single Yallah Habibi together with the Swiss house producer DJ Antoine and the singer Moe Phoenix . The style of the collaboration differs from most of his previous releases due to the dominant dance elements in the song, but nevertheless successfully entered the German-speaking market. The single stayed in the official German single charts for seven weeks and even made it into the top 40 in Switzerland .

His eighth solo album Ich & keine Maske was released on September 27, 2019 . the album entered the German charts at number 1 on October 4, 2019.

In spring 2020, because of the Covid 19 pandemic , Sido played numerous concerts in front of spectators sitting in cars, including three sold out concerts as part of the Hanoverian car culture event series.

TV and film career

After several television appearances as part of the broadcast TV total and presentations, mostly in the context of MTV telecast TRL Urban , Sido was 2007 Jury member of the seventh season of the talent show Popstars . In 2009 Sido had a guest appearance in the film Mannersache with Mario Barth and Dieter Tappert in the leading roles and worked in the reality format Club der Bad Mädchen (broadcast in the Pro7 magazines SAM and taff ) in the third season, which was broadcast in June 2009 as an educator.

One day before the 2009 Bundestag election , on September 26, 2009, ProSieben , in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education , showed the program “Sido goes to vote”. Sido spoke to politicians from all parliamentary groups , including Renate Künast from the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party and SPD chancellor candidate Frank-Walter Steinmeier , and had them explain why he should vote and what the individual politicians and parties stand for. The show was nominated for the 2010 Grimme Prize . “Sido goes to vote” received another nomination in the Best Documentation category for the German Television Award .

For the ORF Sido served as a juror in various talent shows since late 2010, he was a member of the jury in the Austrian casting show heroes of tomorrow and in the talent show The big chance . Between December 2011 and February 2012 the documentary soap Blockstars - Sido macht Band could be seen, in which Sido founded a rap group with young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. In October 2012, Sido caused a scandal with a punch against the then ORF society reporter Dominic Heinzl after an episode of the Great Chance . Heinzl went down a few seconds later. The ORF then suspended the collaboration with Sido. After an apology and only a week with a temporary replacement in the jury, he was reinstated. In March 2014, Sido announced at a concert in Graz that he would no longer be available for the fourth season of the Great Chance from April 2014. The ORF announced that they were separating in "good mutual agreement".

The film Blutzbrüdaz was released on December 29, 2011 , in which Sido plays one of the leading roles. The film started with around 130,000 viewers in 257 cinemas within a week and thus landed at number 6 in the German cinema charts.

In March 2013, he won 300,000 euros on the talk show Absolute Majority with theses on the legalization of soft drugs. He did not provide any information about the use of the money, and his management stated that he would not publicly name the recipients of the donations.

In 2013, Sido was in Die Spätzünder 2 - Heaven should wait to be seen in which he plays himself. In the 2014 film Halbe Brüder by director Christian Alvart , he played a leading role alongside Fahri Yardim and Tedros Teclebrhan .

In the singing casting show The Voice of Germany , Sido was one of the four coaches in the 9th season and reached 5th place with candidate Freschta Akbarzada .

In 2017 he starred alongside Christian Ulmen and Fahri Yardim in two episodes of the comedy television series Jerks , in which he parodied himself.

From July 16 to 19, 2020, Sido was part of a 72-hour live stream on Jens “Knossi” Knossalla's Twitch channel . In addition to himself and Knossalla, Manny Marc and Sascha Hellinger as well as various guests such as Kool Savas , gynecologist , Andreas Bourani and Pietro Lombardi were involved in the so-called “ fishing camp ” near Brandenburg an der Havel . On the first day, the stream cracked the German audience record on the Twitch streaming platform, with around 220,000 simultaneous viewers at times, which was expanded to over 300,000 parallel viewers on the evening of the third day.

Other business activities

In mid-2010 he opened a tattoo shop in Berlin called Me and My Cat , and in 2015 another shop opened in Munich. The Munich studio was closed again in 2017, and the Berlin office no longer exists.

At the beginning of 2013, Sido launched its Superstarz headphones in collaboration with the Belgian company On.Earz . In 2015, Sido opened a bar and another tattoo studio in Munich . In collaboration with Burkhard Westerhoff, Sido also created his own vodka (Kabumm) .

Sido is also one of the financiers of the web TV program 51TV with Playboy 51 . On August 1st, 2010, he was a guest in the two-hour live show, in which he also presented a holiday video and performed various rap lines in a duet with Çalıkıran.

In 2015, Sido founded the independent label Goldzweig .

Controversy

Confrontations with other musicians

In 2004 there was a fight between Sido and the rapper Azad in the backstage area of the MTV HipHop Open in Stuttgart . There are contradicting information about the other parties involved and the exact course of the dispute. The reason is said to have been a sexual insult against Azad's mother that Sido had pronounced on stage.

On January 27, 2007, Sido criticized the band Linkin Park and band member Mike Shinoda's side project Fort Minor on the TRL show . This caused an uproar in the fan base of both bands.

Criminal proceedings

On October 12, 2009, a case against Sido was opened for insult, threat and assault. In the indictment, among other things, he was accused of throwing stones at a disabled woman, which Sido had denied to the end. The proceedings were discontinued against payment of 14,000 euros.

Conflicts in the context of Sido's work for ORF

In September 2011 there was a dispute between Sido and the Kronen Zeitung columnist Michael Jeannée on the ORF casting show Die Große Chance . Thereupon, after Jeannée had declared backstage in front of the camera: “The Sido, who belongs to be destroyed”, the Kronen Zeitung published a very negative article about the rapper under the title The life of the “ORF star” as the only mix of crime and tactlessness . Sido took legal action against the Kronen Zeitung based on the article , successfully sued it for defamation and for damages of 7,000 euros.

In November 2011, Sido caused a scandal at a gala in Vienna by saying "You Austrians sent someone over there who taught us order!" This was interpreted as an allusion to Adolf Hitler . Some ORF presenters, including Martina Kaiser and Eberhard Forcher , reacted with indignation to the statements, especially since Sido was promoted by the Austrian broadcasting company. ORF program director Wolfgang Lorenz then explained: “The sentence that was uttered during Sido's stage show was meant exclusively ironically and an attempt by the artist to lighten the mood on the dance floor. This irony was recognized by the majority of those present and therefore acknowledged with a smile. "

On October 20, 2012, ORF announced that it would end its collaboration with Sido with immediate effect. The day before, following the live show The Great Chance, there was an argument between ORF reporter Dominic Heinzl and Sido, in the course of which Sido was violent. According to a video recording published by Heinzl, the meeting of the two opponents developed into a dispute. The confrontation escalated, and Sido began to insult Heinzl furiously, and finally attacked him with a punch in the face, whereupon Heinzl fell to the ground. On October 21, 2012 Sido apologized to Heinzl's mother via Twitter for an insult expressed in the context of the dispute.

On October 31, 2012, the ORF announced that after a week's break, Sido was back on the jury for the show The big chance . The ORF justified this surprising decision with the fact that both people involved have shown themselves to be aware of their wrong action and thus the reinstatement of Sido can be seen as an example of the ideal end to a dispute - reconciliation and a new start. In his song Here I Am Again , Sido plays with the line “[…] Heinzl does a judo role. On the floor, because he wanted to look for his level there […] ”on the incident.

conspiracy theories

In a video with the hip-hop artist Ali BUMAYE Sido gave the impression that he believes the QAnon - conspiracy theory believe, according to a "deep state", an invisible shadow government, was abusing in underground tunnel systems millions of children, torturing and killing and out of her Blood adrenochrome gain. In the interview, Sido spoke of children who "disappear inexplicably" and of "very rich, very powerful people". Although he has "no idea" what they do with the children, he believes that there could be "something like that". In addition, says Sido, he thinks “yes, the big media have been infiltrated. They all belong to a rich guy who makes sure that he and his kind are protected ”. You need “real alternative media that sometimes say, I don't know one hundred percent, but it could be so”. When asked about Xavier Naidoo's conspiracy theories, Sido Naidoo attested that he came “from the Frankfurt corner” and that he knew other rappers from Frankfurt who had confirmed that there was “something like that, especially in Frankfurt”. Sido explained that the "old Rothschild " had sent his son to Frankfurt, which is why "Frankfurt is also a stock exchange city".

For that Eliran Kendi criticized by Mannheim24 Sido: As long as the word "Jew" to Jump around and replace with "Rothschild", one could not because of sedition be prosecuted, but spread subliminal hatred of Jews. According to Kendi, Sido reaches "into the anti-Semitic bag of tricks" and " trigger [e] [...] the audience specifically in the direction of the Jewish world conspiracy ". On hiphop.de , Sido said that he had "nothing to do with the Attila Hildmanns and KenFMs ", he "laughed [himself] at them."
