Swiss Music Awards
The Swiss Music Awards (SMA) are the largest music awards ceremony in Switzerland . The SMA are awarded annually in an elaborately produced show and serve to promote the national music scene and to present its cultural diversity. The SMA offer newcomers a platform and honor the work of the most successful national and international musicians.
The event celebrated its premiere in 2008 at the Club Kaufleuten in Zurich. In 2010 she moved to the larger Schiffbau venue at the Zurich Schauspielhaus . As a result of its steadily increasing popularity, the SMA took place from 2014 to 2018 in the Zurich Hallenstadion . Since then, tickets for the event have also been available. The Lucerne Culture and Convention Center has been the venue since 2019 . In the same year, “SMA live” was also introduced, a parallel event to the “Ceremony” in which musicians present new Swiss music and international hits in short live performances.
Since 2012, the Swiss Music Awards have been broadcast live in the main program of SRF zwei , in French-speaking Switzerland on One TV on television and by Radiotelevisione Svizzera (RSI) via live streaming . SRF is the producer of the Swiss Music Awards 2019.
Categories
Artists are awarded a total of ten national and four international categories, plus there are two special awards.
National categories
The names of the national categories are Best Female Act , Best Male Act , Best Group , Best Album , Best Live Act , Best Hit , Best Breaking Act , Best Talent , Best Act Romandie , Artist Award. The lender can also award the special prizes Outstanding Achievement Award and Tribute Award.
Since the SMA 2015, the focus of the categories has no longer been on genres, but on the artists themselves. In 2015, the new Artist Award category was introduced: In this category , Swiss artists and musicians determine who will receive an award for artistically outstanding music from their ranks.
The event promotes new artists with the categories SRF 3 Best Talent (awarded by Radio SRF 3 ) and Best Breaking Act .
The lender can one for outstanding performance of an artist Outstanding Achievement Award and a tribute to an artist posthumously Tribute Award lend.
International categories
The names of the international categories are Best Solo Act International , Best Breaking Act International , Best Group International and Best Hit International .

Sponsorship
The Press Play association is the official award winner of the event and is therefore responsible for the regulation and, in cooperation with GfK Switzerland, for the evaluation of the award ceremony. The association consists of the four members IFPI Switzerland , SUISA (cooperative of the authors and publishers of music), Swissperform (collecting society for ancillary copyrights) and SMPA (industry association of professional Swiss concert, show and festival organizers). This guarantees broad support from the music industry.
Preliminary investigation
According to the rules of the SMA, the nomination of artists in most categories primarily depends on sales (physical sound carriers, downloads and streams) and the votes of the Academy. The Academy of the Swiss Music Awards consists of 51 members who represent the entire Swiss music industry and are elected for one year.
The three nominees per category face a public online voting. The sales figures also flow into the result. For the “Best Hit” category, the television broadcasters will conduct a live public voting on the occasion of the award ceremony using SMS and telephone voting.

Claim Event AG is the official organizer of the Swiss Music Awards; Oliver Rosa was the managing director from 2008 to 2018. In 2019, Claim Event was taken over by the two agencies Aroma and FS Parker / Activation. Marc Gobeli has been the new managing director since 2019.
