James Gruntz (born July 16, 1987 in Bern ; actually Jonas Gruntz ) is a Swiss singer-songwriter .

Career

James Gruntz grew up in Nidau am Bielersee , his parents were teachers and played both instruments, the jazz musician George Gruntz was a cousin of his father. He himself learned the drums first and had trumpet lessons for some time. He later had his own keyboard and made his first recordings with a MiniDisc player. At the age of 16 he moved to Basel . He finished his first self-produced album entitled James Started Singing in 2005. At first he suffered from stage fright and the album presentation was his first real live concert. His second album, named after himself, was also released in 2007. In 2008 he was admitted to the Zurich Jazz School , where, after five years of study, he completed a pop course with singing and piano with a master’s degree.

In addition, he continued his career. Gruntz had his first success at the m4music newcomer competition in 2009 with the song Song to the Sea . The following year he was featured as a guest singer on the top 10 album Bittersüessi Pille by rapper Steff la Cheffe , and after that he was repeatedly a guest on successful albums. As a result, a contract with the indie label Bakara Music was concluded in 2011 , on which the album Until We Get There was released that same year . This was his first time in the charts and reached number 28 in the Swiss charts . In 2012 he performed at the Winter Festival in Wolhusen . He was also on stage with his famous relative George Gruntz shortly before his death on January 10, 2013. In the same year he started the hit pop project Reinheart with the lyricist Patrick Savolainen , in which he set his lyrics to music and made the result available as a download EP.

The real breakthrough came in 2014 with the album Belvedere . With the song Heart Keeps Dancing , the first release, he had a radio hit that also hit the single charts, and the album entered the charts at number 7. Thereupon, after four attempts, he was awarded the Basler Pop Prize for the first time and in 2015 at the Swiss Music Awards he received the award for Best Breaking Act as well as the Artist Award , which is given on the basis of a vote among Swiss musicians. He has appeared in the opening act for Tom Odell and at the international Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz . Belvedere was also released in Germany, combined with an appearance at the Reeperbahn Festival .
