history

In 1196 the castle and the place name are mentioned for the first time in castro meo Nidowe 'in my castle Nidau'. This is made up ahd. Nida , nid, in (semi) 'and OHDP, auwia , land on the water, swampy terrain, (half) island' together, meaning thereby that are below preferred Au '.
From 1910 onwards, several municipalities merged in the Biel agglomeration . In 1920, the two cities of Biel and Nidau wanted to merge due to the interwoven settlement development and the increasing economic ties, among other things, and the majority decided in separate referendums for a merger. The Grand Council of the Canton of Bern opposed the plan and did not approve the merger of these cities. The then mostly bourgeois government of the canton did not want the main town of the district of Nidau to merge with the left Biel. A constitutional appeal against this show of force at the Federal Supreme Court changed nothing in this verdict.

Art and culture
Institutions / organizations
The Nidau Cross is the most famous cultural institution in Nidau. In 2012 she was honored by the city council of Nidau for “special achievements in the field of culture”. The small restaurant with 120 seats or 200 standing places is located in the middle of the old town at the Schaalengässli passage (colloquially "Gnägiloch"). Since 1982 the association Kultur Kreuz Nidau + (formerly ONO or OuNidou) has mainly organized concerts, cabaret, theater and readings in the hall, which is located in the back of the building. The diverse programming of around 25–35 annual events draws mainly an adult, culture-loving audience from the region to the center of Nidau. The event hall is also used on a rental basis by clubs, organizations and private individuals for all kinds of events. There are also different dance classes every week. The restaurant in the main building has been run by a cooperative since 1981 and was known nationwide as an alternative meeting place until the end of the 90s. On February 28, 2011, the restaurant business and with it the Kreuz Nidau cooperative was closed after 29 years. The cultural business continues independently of this. The property has been owned by the Wunderland Foundation since 2005.

Nidau Castle
Nidau's landmark is Nidau Castle , which houses the offices of the cantonal administration (including the government governor's office) and the castle museum. The castle museum shows an exhibition on the correction of the Jura waters .
The existence of Nidau Castle is first proven by a document dated August 30, 1196, issued by Count Ulrich III. from Neuchâtel. In him one can assume the builder of the defiant moated castle. The expansion into a real city, i.e. H. to a location with ditches, curtain walls, towers and gates, we owe Rudolf III, the most powerful representative of the Nidau family of counts. As an ardent supporter of Austria, however, he was on friendly terms with Bern; as a result, however, he became the enemies of this city due to the influence of the nobles. The city founder suffered his death in the Battle of Laupen in 1339. The corner defense tower and some remnants of the curtain wall are the only witnesses of the city at that time, whose trapezoidal floor plan is still clearly visible today. In 1375 the powerful count dynasty of Nidau died out with the death of Rudolf IV. The transition to Bern in 1388 meant the dawn of a quieter era for Nidau after a turbulent period. the most important legal provisions for urban life had already been laid down in a tangible festival during the time of the count and later confirmed several times by the Bernese. Until 1831 the castle was the seat of 86 Bernese governors and four senior magistrates.
In times of war and peace, Nidau was an important place because of its location. Nidau was more important than the Bernese Aare towns because it was on the major road that led from the Bernese lands into the Jura and thus to Burgundy, the Free County of Basel and Alsace. In addition, Nidau was on one of the major west-east trade routes that led from southern France and Savoy via Geneva to Lausanne, the Aargau, to Zurich and the Rhine. The port of Nidau on the Zihl and on the lake was of great importance for shipping until the 19th century. The Nidau customs and shipmen made sure that nothing of the income escaped them. In addition, Nidau developed into a large storage area. With the French occupation of Biel in 1798, Nidau became a border and customs place against France.
Folk festivals
City life
Every year, on the last Saturday in May, the “Stedtlifescht Nidau” takes place in Nidau. For this purpose, the main road through Nidau will be closed to all traffic. More than 120 stalls from market vendors and local associations line the streets of the medieval town on this day. The young and old visitors come to Nidau from nearby Biel and the Seeland and stroll happily and calmly through the market until late in the evening.
Town twinning
Nidau maintains a partnership with the German community Schliengen in southern Baden-Württemberg (D).
