The administrative district of Biel / Bienne ( French Arrondissement administratif de Bienne ) in the canton of Bern was founded on January 1, 2010. It belongs to the administrative region of Zealand and comprises 19 municipalities on an area of 97.57 km² with a total of 101,313 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).
Although the smallest in terms of area, the Biel / Bienne administrative district is the third largest administrative district in the canton in terms of population.
It is the only administrative district that knows the bilingualism in dealing with citizens. Official business is conducted in German and / or French.
The main town is Biel / Bienne , although the seat of the decentralized administration of the canton of Bern is in Nidau Castle , the seat of the former district of Nidau .
