history
Excavations in the “Schlangern” and “Leimern” parts of the village show that there were nomadic hunter-fishermen in the area as early as the Middle Stone Age, more than 5000 years ago. Excavations in the “Badhaus” part of the village also bear witness to Roman settlements.
The permanent settlement of Pieterlen began with the Burgundians and Alemanni. The position between French-speaking Burgundians and German-speaking Alemanni was also reflected in the earliest forms of name, as “Perla”, “Pelle” and “Perles” are found alongside “Peterlo”, “Bidderlon” and “Pieterlen”.
The oldest surviving document from a church in Pieterlen is from 1228, from the Bishop of Lausanne. The first mention of the nobles of Pieterlen occurs in a parchment document from 1255. The oldest surviving seals of these knights - with the upright lion, after which today's coat of arms was created - date from 1273.
When and under what circumstances Pieterlen, who ecclesiastically belonged to the diocese of Lausanne, came under the secular rule of the prince-bishops of Basel, is not certain. The unnatural course of the southern border of the prince-bishopric between Neuenstadt and Pieterlen suggests protracted disputes with the Count's House of Neuchâtel-Nidau.
The first more precise information about the legal and border relationships is the "Rodel von Pieterlen", dated from the year 1370. By purchase, Pieterlen went to the Bellelay Monastery (in the Jura) in 1416 and from now on the Pieterlen farmers paid their interest (paid taxes) new landlord, the Abbot of Bellelay.
The new political and economic conditions lasted for 400 years until Pieterlen was converted into the state of Bern in 1815 after the brief turmoil of the French era.
The great village fire, which broke out on August 30, 1726 and in just a few hours burned 28 houses and several granaries and barns to ashes, also fell during this time.
In Pieterlen there was initially a mixed community, as you can still find today in the Jura as a combination of civil and resident communities. But the beginning industrialization and the general increase in population, combined with the freedom of establishment, brought difficulties because of the use of civil goods, in which the non-Burgess residents demanded a share.
So it came to a separation agreement, which came into force on January 1, 1861: The civic community fell mainly to forest and land, while the community was taxed with a capital of 80,000 francs.
With the introduction of the Federal Constitution of 1848, Pieterlen benefited from liberal ideas regarding human and civil rights as well as from the upswing in science and technology:
- new main road 1853
- Railway line 1857
- Industrialization (clock stones and bricks) around 1900
- Supply of electrical energy 1904.
The farming village became an industrial town and the arable and vine growers and small craftsmen became industrial and home workers. It was only after 1950, however, that a certain permanent prosperity set in.
After more than 30 years of planning and construction and 16 years of delay to the originally planned start of construction, the N 5 motorway was opened to traffic just in time for EXPO 02. The motorway was also the trigger for numerous changes that had a lasting impact on the face of the village. The amalgamation of goods in agriculture and the renaturation of the Denier would probably not have been realized without this national structure.
With the opening of the autobahn on April 18, 2002, the basis for a further major development step of the Pieterlen location from “Dörfli” to a diverse agglomeration community was laid. Between 2003 and the end of 2017, the population grew by an additional 920 inhabitants (+ 21%) to a total of 4,290 people. During this period, the brickworks was modernized and internationally active companies such as Festo Microtechnology AG, Stähli Läpp Technik AG or Petracca Sàrl carry the name Pieterlen all over the world.
