Twann ( French: Douanne ) was until December 31, 2009 a municipality in the district of Nidau in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . On January 1, 2010, it merged with the municipality of Tüscherz-Alfermée to form the municipality of Twann-Tüscherz .
In addition to the resident community, there is also an Evangelical Reformed church community (together with Tüscherz-Alfermée ) and a civic community .
Twann is 86.9% a German-speaking community. 6% of the population are French-speaking.
geography
Twann is located in the Bernese Seeland on the north shore of Lake Biel . It consists of the districts of Twann, Wingreis and Gaicht. The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Lamboing , Tüscherz-Alfermée , Ligerz and Prêles . The front part of the St. Petersinsel , which borders on Erlach BE , and the Twannberg also belong to the municipality .
history
The first written mention of this place took place in 1185, at that time it was called Duana . In 1225 the place became Tuanna . The place is mentioned by name in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's novel Der Richter und seine Henker , published in 1950 .
Twann was an independent municipality until December 31, 2009 .
traffic
Twann owns an SBB train station on the southern foot of the Jura . There is also a ship landing site for the ships of the BSG .
Schools and institutions
Twann owns a school in which the 3rd to 9th grade (Real and Secondary School) is taught. Because of the small school classes in the communities of Twann, Ligerz and Tüscherz-Alfermée , the formerly three schools have been combined to form the schools TLT. 1st and 2nd class take place in Ligerz.
In 1980 the Twannberg holiday village designed by the architect Justus Dahinden was inaugurated. The building complex received the Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1981 .
