Municipalities of the Canton of Bern
The canton of Bern ( French Canton de Berne ) comprises 342 political communities (French communes ). It is the canton with the largest number of political communities in Switzerland. The capital is the federal city of Bern . The main locations of the administrative districts are highlighted in bold .
Purely political communities without a civic community (French commune bourgeoise ) are referred to as municipalities ( communes municipales ) , those in which residents and civic communities are united as mixed communities ( communes mixtes ) .

The total area of the canton is 5,959.52 km². In addition to the 5,840.54 km² of land in the municipalities, it also contains 118.98 km² of lake areas ( Lake Biel 39.17 km², Lake Brienz 29.77 km², Neuchâtel lake 2.19 km², Lake Thun 47.85 km²).
