Wiler bei Utzenstorf is a municipality in the Emmental administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
geography
Wiler near Utzenstorf lies at 462 m above sea level. M. , 6 km south of the city of Solothurn (straight line). The village extends in the flat alluvial plain of the Emme , east of the canalised river course, in the Swiss Plateau .
The area of the 3.8 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Bernese plateau. The area is almost completely flat; the fertile and agriculturally intensively used alluvial plain of the Emme rises slightly towards the south. The canalised and straightened Emme forms the municipality boundary in the west and northwest and is accompanied by a narrow forest belt and a side canal. From the Emme the municipality extends over an agricultural zone to the east into the extensive Wilerwald and to the southeast to the Wilerfeld , on which at 471 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Wiler near Utzenstorf is reached. The plain is drained by the Strackbach to the north to the Emme. In 1997, 13% of the municipal area was in settlements, 31% in forests and woodlands, 55% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
The hamlet of Wilerfeld ( 469 m above sea level ) on the southern edge of the municipality belongs to Wiler near Utzenstorf . Neighboring communities of Wiler bei Utzenstorf are Zielebach , Utzenstorf and Bätterkinden .

With 963 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Wiler bei Utzenstorf is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Bern. 96.4% of the residents speak German, 1.3% speak Italian and 1.0% speak French (as of 2000). The population of Wiler near Utzenstorf was 337 in 1850 and 402 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population rose continuously to 845 people until 1970. Since then, a slightly downward trend has been observed.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Wiler bei Utzenstorf was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, agriculture , animal husbandry and forestry have a certain role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Wiler near Utzenstorf there are today companies in the building trade, mechanical engineering and metal construction, horticulture and wood processing. The nationally known Carbagas AG also produces non-toxic industrial and medical gases. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the Solothurn area .
traffic
The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on a connecting road from Utzenstorf to Gerlafingen . The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern-Zurich) is around 5 km from the town center. On May 26, 1875 the railway line from Burgdorf to Solothurn was put into operation. However, the Wiler train station near Utzenstorf was not opened until 1908.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1261 under the name Wilere ; from 1387 the spelling Wiler has been handed down. The place name goes back to the Old High German word wilari (small village, hamlet).
Since the Middle Ages Wiler near Utzenstorf was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Kyburg and belonged to the Landshut rule . With this rule in 1413 the village came under the influence of the Bernese Landvogtei Wangen , which exercised high jurisdiction. With the sale of the Landshut estate in 1514, Wiler near Utzenstorf came under direct Bernese rule and was assigned to the Landshut bailiff.
After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Wiler near Utzenstorf belonged to the Burgdorf district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Fraubrunnen Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Wiler bei Utzenstorf does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Utzenstorf.
