Location of the municipality | |
Wangen an der Aare is a political municipality and capital of the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
The small town with the historic town center is located in a rural setting directly on the large Mittelland river Aare between the towns of Olten and Solothurn , but belongs to the Bernese Oberaargau . An old covered wooden bridge crosses the river. Wangen an der Aare was also the capital of the former administrative district of the same name . In the municipality, the small river Ösch flows into the Aare as a Mühlbach .
Neighboring communities are Attiswil , Wiedlisbach , Walliswil bei Wangen and Wangenried . In the west the community borders on the canton of Solothurn .
history
Wangen is believed to have been founded by the Counts of Kyburg in the middle of the 13th century . The word Wang (en) means terrain at the foot of a slope, here probably the slope of the nearby Jura range . Wangen belonged together with Ursenbach , Huttwil and Herzogenbuchsee to the Kyburg district court Herzogenbuchsee ( high court ). In the second half of the 14th century, Wangen was pledged several times. After the Gugler War , Wangen fell back to the Neu-Kyburger . After the Burgdorf War , the climax in the conflict over the Landgraviate of Burgundy , Count Rudolf II of Kyburg moved his seat of power from Burgdorf to Wangen. In 1385 the Kyburgers pledged the city to Hemman von Grünenberg and wanted to sell it to Habsburg in 1387 , which, however , had to give up its territories in western Switzerland after the battle of Sempach . In 1406, Count Berchtold and Egon von Kyburg, the last of their family, were forced to cede the city of Wangen to Bern . Bern released the Grünenberg pledge and also acquired all Habsburg rights. In 1408, Bern sent the carpenter Heinrich Gruber as the first bailiff to Wangen for 15 years, with the task of strengthening the city and building a new bridge over the Aare. The bailiff had the largest share of the income from his administrative area. The Bailiwick of Wangen was later the most profitable Bernese bailiwick.
With the end of shipping on the Aare in the 19th century, the small town fell into an economic crisis. During the construction of the railway line between Solothurn and Olten, the Gäubahn , Wangen an der Aare received its own train station.
The A 1 motorway junction at Wangen an der Aare, located in the neighboring town of Wiedlisbach, has been in operation since 1968 .

Two crossed blue keys in silver. The Petri Keys go back to the Zähringian monastery of St. Peter in the Black Forest , which owned rich property in Oberaargau. The coat of arms has been documented since 1380.
Gun place
Today's arsenal of the Swiss Army continues its history as a military base . The warehouses on the river formed the cornerstone. Field howitzers were stationed there during the First World War . Today Wangen an der Aare is the center of the transport troops and a training place for the disaster relief and rescue formations . The pontoniers (part of the pioneer troop , which in Switzerland is called the Genietruppe) also practice here.
economy
In order to improve the economic situation, in 1824, on the initiative of the Oberamtmann von Wangen Rudolf Emanuel Effinger von Wildegg, the "Savings and Lending Cassa des Oberamts Wangen" was established as a stock corporation with a capital of 10,000 pounds. It later became the "savings bank of the district of Wangen", which functioned as a regional bank in the district of Wangen. In 1994 the savings bank was taken over by the Swiss Bank Corporation.
The bedding factory Roviva Roth & Cie AG , which still exists today, emerged from a horsehair spinning mill mentioned in 1748 . A textile dyeing factory is also known from the early 19th century. This branch of industry was continued in the textile manufacture (Howald, Schweizer, Nabholz), which was located in Wangen until the 1980s . According to the 2000 census, around 60% of employed residents work outside the community.
traffic
The A1 Geneva - St. Margrethen motorway, which runs on the northern edge of Wangen, crosses the main road 22 Murten - Herzogenbuchsee at the Wangen an der Aare junction , which runs as a bypass road on the edge of the town. The Wangen train station is on the Gäubahn Olten - Solothurn.
