Until December 31, 2015, Hermiswil was a political municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . On January 1, 2016, she merged with Seeberg .

geography

Hermiswil is 494  m above sea level. M. , four kilometers south of Herzogenbuchsee and ten kilometers southwest of the city of Langenthal (as the crow flies). The small farming village extends in the central Önztal , in the Molasse hill country of the Buchsiberge mountains south of Herzogenbuchsee, in Oberaargau .

The area of ​​the 1.1 km² former municipal area covers a section of the Bernese Mittelland . The area is crossed from south to north by the Önz, which has been channeled and straightened here in a 500 m wide valley floor. For a long time, this section of the Önztal lay on the edge of the Ice Age Rhone glacier and served as a meltwater channel. The western border runs along the edge of the valley at the foot of Steinhof. To the east, the former municipality extends over the steep forest slopes of Guldisberg and Humberg to the ridge of the Molasse height , on which 597  m above sea level. With 96 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) Hermiswil was one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Bern. 99.0% of the residents speak German and 1.0% speak Romansh (as of 2000). The population of Hermiswil was 155 inhabitants in 1850, and 112 inhabitants in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population decreased to 78 people by 1930. Since around 1950, the population has always fluctuated between 100 and 120 people.

Hermiswil was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1289 under the name Hermanswile . Later the names Hermenswile (1361), Hermannswyl (1386), Hermenschwyl (1539) and Hermiswyl (1784) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Hariman and thus means Hariman's homestead .

Since the Middle Ages Hermiswil has probably belonged to the Lords of Stein, who were under the sovereignty of the Kyburger . The village came to the city of Solothurn by inheritance in 1466 . Only with the signing of the Wyniger Treaty in 1665 did Hermiswil come under the rule of Bern and was assigned to the Landvogtei Wangen and the Bollodingen district court. In the 17th century the place was a changing station for stagecoaches (inn "zum weissen Rössli"). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Hermiswil belonged to the district of Wangen during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Oberamt Wangen, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Hermiswil does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Herzogenbuchsee.

On January 1, 2016, Hermiswil was incorporated into Seeberg .
