Walliswil bei Niederbipp is a municipality in the Oberaargau administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

Walliswil near Niederbipp is 431  m above sea level. M. , 3 km east of the district capital Wangen an der Aare and 13 km east-northeast of the city of Solothurn ( linear distance ). The farming village extends on the northern slope of the Aare valley across from Walliswil bei Wangen, in the Bipperamt of Oberaargau .

The area of ​​the 1.4 km² large municipal area covers a section of the northern Bernese Mittelland . The Aare, which is deepened into a valley here, forms the southern border for around 3 km. From the river, the municipality extends northward over the valley floodplain and the low terrace up to the height of the longitudinal forest . This forest back formed during the Würm the terminal moraine of the Rhone glacier . On the Chällerrain , which drops with a steep slope to the Aare, is 500  m above sea level. The population of Walliswil bei Niederbipp was 204 inhabitants in 1850 and 233 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population has always fluctuated between 170 and 240 people. Since 1990 (198 inhabitants) there has been a slight increase in population.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Walliswil bei Niederbipp was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, arable and fruit growing as well as cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in a gravel and concrete plant and in a mechanical workshop. A large gravel pit is being exploited north of the village. Walliswil near Niederbipp is the location of a retirement and nursing home. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1102 under the name Walaswiler , although it is not clear which Walliswil it was. Later the names Walaswille (1324), Walaswile (1332), Walleswil (1347) and Walliswil (1427) appeared. The place name could either have been derived from the Old High German word walah (Welsch, Romansh-speaking) or from the personal name Walacho . Accordingly, it means at the Walacho / Welschen homestead .

Since the Middle Ages Walliswil near Niederbipp has been under the Landgraviate of Buchsgau , which was administered by the Counts of Frohburg . It belonged to the rule of Bipp and since the beginning of the 14th century to the office of Erlinsburg, which came to the Counts of Neuchâtel-Nidau ​​in 1332. Furthermore, Walliswil near Niederbipp shared the fate of the Bipp rule, which experienced numerous changes of ownership. As part of this rule, the village came under the joint administration of Bern and Solothurn in 1413. After the division of Buchsgau, Walliswil near Niederbipp came under the sole sovereignty of Bern in 1463 and was assigned to the Bipp bailiff.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798) Walliswil near Niederbipp belonged to the district of Wangen during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Oberamt Wangen, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. Today the village works closely with the neighboring communities in the social, educational and socio-political areas; Community affairs are partly handled from Wangen an der Aare.
