geography

Niederönz lies at 460  m above sea level. M. , 1 km west of Herzogenbuchsee and 8 km west-southwest of the city of Langenthal (linear distance). The village stretches across the broad gravel plain of the Önz , where it emerges from the molasse hills of the higher plateau , in Oberaargau .

The area of the 2.8 km² municipal area comprises a weak relief section of the northern Bernese Mittelland . The main part of the area is taken up by the approximately 2 km wide plain of the Önz near Herzogenbuchsee. The Önz flows from south to north through the municipal ban, takes up the Seebach from the left and gradually deepens into the gravel plain near the northern border with a roughly 200 m wide valley. To the west, the municipality extends to the forest hill of the Önzberg , on which at 513  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Niederönz is reached. In a narrow strip, the area extends south into the oak forest and into the Chlepfimoos moor near Burgäschisee . In 1997, 15% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 29% for forests and woodlands and 56% for agriculture.

The settlements Chlifeld , Eggen , Flueacher and Wisi belong to Niederönz , all at 462  m above sea level. M. located in the plain west of the Önz. Neighboring communities of Niederönz are Inkwil , Heimenhausen and Herzogenbuchsee in the canton of Bern and Aeschi (SO) and Bolken in the canton of Solothurn .

population

With 1670 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Niederönz is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Bern. 91.9% of the residents speak German, 2.7% speak Italian and 1.8% speak Turkish (as of 2000). The population of Niederönz was 435 in 1850 and 446 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population rose continuously to 738 people by 1960. Since then, there has been a marked increase in population combined with a doubling of the population within 40 years. The settlement area of Niederönz has now grown together seamlessly with those of Herzogenbuchsee and Oberönz.

Water supply

The water supply is the responsibility of the municipal association of water supply on the lower Oenz (WVOe). Like many other water suppliers, the WVOe has to contend with chlorothalonil metabolites . Water samples from 2019 showed that the applicable maximum values were exceeded in four of the WVOe's drinking water catchments. As a result of the heat and drought in 2019 , customers were asked in July of the same year to limit their water consumption .

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Niederönz was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, thanks to the fertile soil, as well as animal husbandry and forestry, agriculture has a certain place in the income structure of the population.

Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Commercial and industrial zones can be found on the northern edge of the village on the road from Herzogenbuchsee to Solothurn . Bystronic Laser AG as well as metal processing, construction, hydraulic machine construction, electrical engineering and mechanical workshops are represented in Niederönz today . In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Langenthal-Herzogenbuchsee region, some also in the Solothurn area.

traffic

The community is located near the main road from Herzogenbuchsee to Solothurn . Niederönz is connected to the public transport network by a BSU bus line , which operates the route from Solothurn to Herzogenbuchsee.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1139 under the name Oentze . Later the names Onza (1166), Onze (1248), Honzen (1258), Uenzo (1263) and Onz (1278) appeared; Only the name Nidern-Oentz from 1350 is clear .

In the Middle Ages, Niederönz was initially under the sovereignty of the Dukes of Zähringen, from 1218 under that of the Kyburger and belonged to the court court of the Herzogenbuchsee Provost. In 1406 Niederönz came under the rule of Bern and was assigned to the Bailiwick of Wangen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the district of Wangen during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Oberamt Wangen, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

Attractions

In the old town center some characteristic farmhouses in the Bernese country style from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. There are two Heidenstocks in Niederönz, dating from the 15th century and 1535. The latter was probably built as a castle complex (square complex with strong walls) and is now used as a warehouse. Also worth mentioning are the Schürchhaus (built in 1900) with the typical "Bernerbogen" and facade painting, as well as the Lower Mill, built in 1738, which is still in use today. Niederönz does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Herzogenbuchsee.
