history

The place, built on a moraine of the Rhone Glacier from the last Ice Age , looks back on a long history. Ten thousand years ago, the area around the Inkwilersee and Burgäschisee were settled. Foundations of Roman buildings from around AD 200 have been found in various places around today's Reformed Church. The first written mention under the name puhsa ( spoken Buchsa , from Latin buxum , which means book ), dates from the year 886 in the writings of the St. Gallen monastery . At that time the village belonged to the East Franconian Empire after various partitions of the European empire of the Carolingians . Around 920 the region was occupied by the Burgundian king Rudolf and from 1033 it belonged to the German Empire as a part of the Burgundian empire. In the following centuries, Herzogenbuchsee was under the rule of the Zähringer , who represented the Burgundians regionally , the Kyburger and then under Altbernian sovereignty within the Confederation . The name "Herzogenbuchze" appears for the first time in 1301 in a document. It seems that it was introduced to distinguish it from Münchenbuchsee and that it was based on the Kyburg aristocratic family who ruled the village at that time.

The last battle in the Swiss Peasants' War took place on June 7, 1653 in Herzogenbuchsee. The village went up in flames during the fighting.

On Christmas Eve 2019, the Reformed Church of the community burned twice, with the burning spire falling on the roof of the church when it flared up again in the evening, causing serious damage to the building.
