Paul Born-Moser

Paul Born-Moser (* 14. April 1859 in Herzogenbuchsee ; † 28. March 1928 ) was a Swiss producer and internationally renowned entomologist , in particular, handles the genus Carabus ( Insecta , Coleoptera ) with a focus on the Central and the western Alps employed Orinocarabans.

Career

Inspired by his father, the National Councilor Albrecht Friedrich Born, Paul Born-Moser became interested in entomology, especially beetles , at an early age . He carried out dozens of excursions alone and often accompanied by members of his family and friends in Switzerland, France and Italy , among other things to explore the distribution of the beetles of the genus Carabus and to classify their taxonomic position. In doing so, he penetrated into alpine regions that had previously been little explored, whereby difficult technical and political barriers had to be overcome under the circumstances of the time. He published the results of these excursions and thus significantly expanded our knowledge of the genus Carabus in the western Alpine world. In addition, he published a number of works on the genus Carabus from other countries ( China , Russia , Austria , Romania , etc.). Many of the carabens he described have retained their taxonomic status to this day.

The University of Bern awarded him an honorary doctorate on the basis of his publications (more than 160), the critical-scientific analysis expressed in them and his extensive collection . The extensive Born Collection is looked after by the Entomological Department of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich , where it is generally accessible.

His main occupation was the managing owner of a silk ribbon factory .
