Willi Sauter

Willi Sauter (born July 25, 1928 in Kradolf ) is a Swiss entomologist specializing in butterflies (Lepidoptera) and professor emeritus at ETH Zurich .

biography

Willi Sauter attended primary and secondary schools in Kradolf and in 1944 switched to the canton school in Frauenfeld, which he graduated with the Matura in 1947. In 1951 he graduated from the ETH Zurich as a natural scientist and took up an assistant position at the zoological institute. He did his doctorate under Jakob Seiler with a thesis on the morphology and systematics of the Swiss Solenobia species.

From 1959 to 1993 Willi Sauter was a lecturer in entomology and curator of the entomological collection at the ETH Zurich. In 1971 he was appointed adjunct professor.

Willi Sauter made a name for himself in particular as a systematist and described various new species (namely the Psychidae species Dahlica seileri, Dahlica goppensteinensis, Dahlica generosensis, Siederia rupicolella, Brevantennia siederi ); in addition, the species Dahlica sauteri was named after him in 1977 .

Sauter is an honorary member of the Entomological Society Zurich . At the 20th Symposium Internationale Entomofaunisticum Europae Centralis SIEEC in Cluj (May 26th - 30th, 2007) he was awarded a medal for his life's work in entomology.
