From 1982 Jarmo Övermark achieved steadily better placings at the international championships. So he finished in 1982 both at the European Championships in Varna and at the World Championships in Katowice, 6th place in the middleweight division.

At the world championship in 1983 in Kiev he even managed to jump onto the podium in the middleweight division , defeating Ion Draica from Romania in the battle for the bronze medal .
