Seinäjoki [ ˈsɛi̯næjɔki ] is a city in western Finland . The name means border river, as in the German Wandsbek .

On January 1, 2005, the town of Seinäjoki was merged with the Peräseinäjoki municipality and some villages belonging to the Ilmajoki municipality . As a result, their area grew from 134 square kilometers to 603 square kilometers. At the beginning of 2009, the communities Nurmo and Ylistaro were also incorporated into the city of Seinäjoki. After the municipal merger, Seinäjoki has over 55,000 inhabitants.

Some of the town's buildings were designed by Alvar Aalto , such as the town library, the Lakeuden Risti Church , built between 1957 and 1960, and the administration buildings.

In the 2008 local elections, the Liberal Center Party and the conservative National Collection Party were tied. In the city council, the highest decision-making body in municipal affairs, they each have 17 out of 51 deputies. The third strongest force are the Social Democrats with 10 seats, followed by the Christian Democrats and the right-wing populist True Finns with two seats each, and the Greens and the Left Alliance with one seat each. Furthermore, the Lupa luottaa (“Allow trust”) electoral list with a member of the City Council is on the city council represented. This electoral community had spoken out vehemently against the incorporation of Nurmo and Ylistaro into the city of Seinäjoki, which was scheduled for January 1, 2009 , and received the greatest support in these places.

As a rail hub with routes to Tampere , Kaskinen , Vaasa , Oulu and Haapamäki , it plays a prominent role in the Finnish long-distance network. The Seinäjoki Airport is located 11 kilometers south of the city center.

Culture

Every year in July, the famous Tango Festival takes place in Seinäjoki , where a Tango King and a Tango Queen are chosen. A second well-known event also takes place in June: Provinssirock , one of the largest rock events in the country.

Sports

In 2013, the club Seinäjoen JK, which emerged from the merger of TP-Seinäjoki and Sepsi-78 in 2007, made it to the top Finnish football league. The Seinäjoki Crocodiles American football team is based in Seinäjoki. In ice hockey, the city is represented by the S-Kiekkos team. The Nurmon Jymy club has departments in volleyball, pesäpallo and floorball and is also known for its wrestlers and track and field athletes.
