On January 1, 2005, the town of Seinäjoki was merged with the Peräseinäjoki municipality and some villages belonging to the Ilmajoki municipality . As a result, their area grew from 134 square kilometers to 603 square kilometers. At the beginning of 2009, the communities Nurmo and Ylistaro were also incorporated into the city of Seinäjoki. After the municipal merger, Seinäjoki has over 55,000 inhabitants.
Some of the town's buildings were designed by Alvar Aalto , such as the town library, the Lakeuden Risti Church , built between 1957 and 1960, and the administration buildings.

In the 2008 local elections, the Liberal Center Party and the conservative National Collection Party were tied. In the city council, the highest decision-making body in municipal affairs, they each have 17 out of 51 deputies. This electoral community had spoken out vehemently against the incorporation of Nurmo and Ylistaro into the city of Seinäjoki, which was scheduled for January 1, 2009 , and received the greatest support in these places.
