Lapua [ lɑpuɑ ] ( Swedish Lappo ) is a city in the landscape Southern Ostrobothnia in western Finland with 14,427 inhabitants (December 31, 2018) and an area of 750.81 square kilometers, of which 13.75 square kilometers of inland water area .

Lapua is located at the confluence of the Lapuanjoki and Nurmonjoki rivers .

history

The Lapua movement came into being here in 1929 when the population of the small town took action against socialists after a communist youth organization marched through the city in late November.

economy

The state ammunition factory was founded in Lapua in 1927 and since 1998 it has belonged to the Scandinavian joint venture Nammo as Nammo Lapua Oy . Sports, hunting and military ammunition with the brand name Lapua contributed and continues to make the Finnish city famous around the world. The factory was relocated out of town after a serious explosion in 1976 that left 40 people dead. In 1992 Lapua took over the East German ammunition factory SK Schönebeck. Lapua is a leading manufacturer of biathlon sports ammunition, used by most of the top biathletes.

Attractions

The cathedral , built in 1827 by Heikki Kuorikoski , an employee of Carl Ludwig Engels , houses the largest organ in Finland.
