Lantana is a city in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida with 10,423 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Lantana is located in Palm Beach County about 15 kilometers south of West Palm Beach . Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 and Florida State Roads 5 and 812 run through the city . The Palm Beach County Park Airport west of Lantana can also be reached via State Road 812 , which is commonly referred to as Lantana Airport . Rail connections to the Tri-Rail are available in Lake Worth and Boynton Beach .

history

The first settlers came to the area after the Seminole Wars, during the tenure of US President John Tyler , when Congress passed the Armed Occupation Act of 1842 . At that time, the family of MB Lyman was given the honor of founding the city. When he settled there in 1888, he immediately opened several shops, including a post office. He named the post office Lantana Point , named after the wild growing bushes of the convertible rose (botan .: Lantana ). The word point was dropped over time.

One of Lyman's companies was the Lantana Fish Company . In the first decade of the 20th century, the oyster trade became the leading trade in the town. In 1921 Lantana was officially registered as a town with 100 inhabitants.

After the Second World War , Lantana experienced a building boom that continues to this day. In the mid-1970s, Interstate 95 was built, which runs through the urban area of ​​Lantanas and promoted further economic development.

Since 1950 the city has been home to the AG Holley Hospital, the last of the old state-run sanatoriums for tuberculosis patients.

From 1974 to 1988, the tallest decorated Christmas tree in the world was erected in Lantana every year. He was transported by rail from the Pacific Northwest and positioned on the National Enquirer site next to the tracks of the East Coast Railway . The campaign developed into one of the most spectacular events in all of South Florida. The festivities ended in 1988 when the newspaper was sold following the death of Enquirer founder Generoso Pope Jr.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 10,423 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 5,186 households. The population density was 1766.7 inh / km². 69.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 22.0% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 1.5% as Asian Americans . 4.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.8% to several ethnic groups. 18.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 26.8% of all households lived in 29.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 56.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.45 people and the average family size was 3.20 people.

24.0% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 25.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 31.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 50.5% of the population were male and 49.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 42,731, with 21.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 73.24% of the population, 13.95% spoke Spanish , 6.82% spoke Haitian, and 5.99% had another native language.

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 454 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were twelve rapes, 31 robberies, 32 assaults, 102 break-ins, 348 thefts, 15 car thefts and one arson.
