history

The earliest known residents in the Boca Raton area were the Tequesta , who lived in small communities on the coast a thousand years earlier until the 18th century . The bridge over the Florida East Coast Canal and the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1890 brought a number of resourceful pioneers to the area. Until 1900, Boca Raton was a small agricultural community whose farmers had specialized in the cultivation of pineapples. There was also a group of Japanese immigrants under the leadership of Joseph Sakai , who in 1904 formed a small village near what is now Yamato Street.

In May 1925, at the height of the Florida country boom , the local council hired architect Addison Mizner to design a super-class vacation community. His exclusive hotel, known as the Cloister Inn , was completed in 1926. Although many of Mizner's plans for the young community went up in smoke through property transfers during the land boom, some survived, and his architectural style still influences the appearance of the city today.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the place was known for its winter vegetables, especially green beans , which won awards in the northern markets. In 1942 the Air Force founded an air force base, the Boca Raton Army Air Force Base, on land confiscated from the Japanese population, which was primarily built for the training of Boeing B-29 units. Today's airport was built on parts of this base. This military settlement led to a population increase of around 30,000 soldiers, civilian employees and their families for the small town, which only had 723 inhabitants in 1940. In the 1960s, the south of Florida experienced its second land boom with the result that more and more marshland was drained and arable land was turned from it, while arable land near the city became building land and the city limits expanded.

In 1962, Boca Raton was given the new Florida Atlantic State University - also on the site of the now disused military base . In 1967 IBM relocated one of its computer developments to Boca Raton, and in 1981 the IBM PC was developed here. During the 1980s and 1990s, the city turned its attention to the redevelopment of the inner city while preserving the historic buildings and squares, such as the former town hall and the FEC train station. The historic buildings have been renovated and opened to the public.

In 2012 , presidential challenger Mitt Romney held the secretly filmed speech in the city in which he described 47 percent of Americans as “social parasites” in front of an audience of financially strong election campaign donors. In the small Lynn University, where 24 percent of the students come from abroad, the third television speech duel of the presidential candidates took place on October 22, 2012. The small university - 2,100 students and 181 lecturers - had invested five million dollars to set up the infrastructure for the media event and thousands of journalists and to ensure that everything ran smoothly.
