The Palm Beach County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is West Palm Beach . Together with parts of Miami-Dade County and Broward County , eastern Palm Beach County forms the Miami metropolitan area .

The county is the largest in terms of area and has the third most inhabitants in Florida. In a national comparison of the most populous counties, it ranks 28th.

geography

The county has an area of ​​6181 square kilometers, of which 1068 square kilometers are water. The body of water consists mainly of the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Okeechobee . The percentage of the total water area is 17.27 percent. The county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Broward County , Hendry County, and Martin County .

history

Palm Beach County was formed on April 30, 1909 from the northern part of what was then Dade County. The name goes back to the first Palm Beach community ; Its name was based on the numerous palm trees and beaches.

In 1915, the southern half of the county was used to form the northern portion of Broward County .

The construction of the railway line from Key West to Jacksonville ( Florida East Coast Railway ) made a first important contribution to the development of the county in its beginnings shortly after 1900.

According to the 2010 census, the then 1,320,134 inhabitants were distributed among 664,594 households. The population density was 213.6 inh / km². 73.5% of the population were white, 17.3% African American , 0.5% Native American , and 2.4% Asian Americans . 4.1% were members of other races and 2.3% of different races. 19.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 27.2% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 37.0% of all households. 62.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.39 people and the average family size was 2.97 people.

22.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 44 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 52,951, with 13.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 78.36% of the population, 11.89% spoke Spanish and 9.75% had another mother tongue.
