The Washington County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Chipley . The county is part of the Dry Counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

history

Washington County was formed on December 9, 1825 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after George Washington , the first President of the United States, whose term of office lasted from 1789 to 1797. In 1899, a narrow majority passed a referendum to ban the manufacture and sale of alcohol.

The county is located in northwest Florida and has an area of ​​1595 square kilometers, of which 93 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Bay County , Walton County, and Holmes Counties .

As of the 2010 census , Washington County had 24,896 people in 10,755 households. The population density was 16.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 80.4% white, 15.0% African American , 1.3% Indian and 0.5% Asian Americans . 0.7% were members of other races and 2.1% of different races. 2.9% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 31.8% of all households. 69.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.50 people and the average family size was 2.97 people.

23.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 54.5% of the population were male and 44.5% were female.

The median income for a household in the 38,536 USD , while 20.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 94.40% of the population, 2.51% spoke Spanish and 3.09% had another mother tongue.
