The railway line opened in the following year created a continuous rail link between Pensacola and Jacksonville . From 1912 to the late 1930s there was also a branch line from Chipley to Southport, north of Panama City .

Until 2005, the Chipley station was a station of the Sunset Limited of the Amtrak railway company from Orlando to Los Angeles . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina , the line was shortened to the New Orleans - Los Angeles route.
