history

In the 1990s, the Panama City – Bay County International Airport , located six kilometers north of the city center of Panama City, no longer met the requirements, as the longer runway 14/32 was comparatively short with a length of 1923 meters and did not exceed the take-off point. and runway end security areas.

In 1996, various options for extending the runways were examined for their environmental compatibility. The review concluded that runway 16/34 should be extended into the northwestern end of Goose Bayou. However, this would have had a negative impact on the protected waters. In 1998, the corresponding plans were rejected again and instead the possibility of relocating the airport was examined. With support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), a feasibility study was initiated the following year. Various locations were proposed in 2000. In 2006, the FAA approved the site north of West Bay. In the same year, the state of Florida also issued the necessary permits. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in November 2007, but construction work on the new airport did not begin until January 2008.

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport opened on May 23, 2010. In addition, a crosswind runway should be built to cover a larger range of wind directions and thus increase the safety of small aircraft during take-offs and landings. However, those plans were put on hold in 2014 for financial reasons.
