Tyndall , a Florida First World War aviator who was killed in action in 1930. In February 1942, the training of gunmen began, and air force soldiers from other nations took part. After the formation of the United States Air Force in 1947, the name changed to Tyndall Air Force Base and it continued to serve for the training of fighter pilots. Since 1958, the base has been the site of William Tell , an annual flying competition between various combat aircraft units from the USA and Canada that has been held since 1954 . The organizational affiliation of Tyndall AFB changed several times, in July 1993 the AETC finally took over the base from the Air Combat Command .
