Panama City is a city and also the county seat of Bay County in the US state of Florida with 37,635 inhabitants (as of 2016).

geography

Panama City is bordered by the cities of Springfield and Lynn Haven . The city is about 140 km west of Tallahassee on St. Andrews Bay , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway along the Gulf Coast . The city is the center of the Panama City Metropolitan Statistical Area , which corresponds to Bay County.

history

The railway age in Panama City began in 1908 with the construction of the railway line to Dothan ( Alabama ) on Cottondale by the Atlanta and St. Andrews Bay Railroad (ASAB). Since then there was a junction in Cottondale with the then Louisville and Nashville Railroad . The ASAB was in 1994 in the Bay Line Railroad .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 36,484 inhabitants were distributed over 17,438 households. The population density was 687.1 inh / km². 71.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 22.0% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 1.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.9% to several ethnic groups. 5.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 27.9% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 27.9% of all households. 58.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.28 people and the average family size was 2.91 people.

23.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 49.1% of the population were male and 50.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 41,067, with 16.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.89% of the population, 3.10% spoke Spanish and 3.01% had another mother tongue.

Since 1999, a long-distance triathlon (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) has been held here every August with the Ironman Florida .

The city is crossed by US Highways 98 ( SR 30A ) and 231 ( SR 75 ) and Florida State Roads 77 , 327 , 390 and 391 . Rail freight towards Dothan ( Alabama ) on Cottondale is from Bay Line Railroad performed. The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is approximately 30 km northwest of the city.

The crime rate in 2018 was 446 points, higher than 93.4% of American cities. There were two murders, four rapes, 45 robberies, 183 physical injuries, 423 break-ins, 1,467 thefts, 260 car thefts and three arson in 2018.

Town twinning

Panama City's twin city has been the Mexican city of Mérida , capital of the state of Yucatán , since 2003 .
