Mike Campbell (born February 1, 1950 in Panama City , Florida ) is an American musician and was the guitarist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers .

Life

At the age of 16 he got his first guitar. After playing in two bands (Dead Or Alive, Mudcrutch ) early in his career , the guitarist became a founding member of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 1975 , to which he has been a continuous member ever since. He also co-produced several of the band's albums as well as Tom Petty's three solo albums Full Moon Fever , Wildflowers and Highway Companion . He also wrote some songs for other artists, for example most of the first LP by Meat Loaf ( Meat Loaf feat. Stoney , 1978). His most successful composition is probably the song The Boys of Summer , which he wrote with Don Henley . Campbell has been married to his wife Marcie since 1975, with whom he has three children.

The Dirty Knobs

In addition to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers , Mike Campell is productive in the band The Dirty Knobs. Campell himself says of the sound of the Dirty Knobs that it is a bit "edgier" than the sound of the Heartbreakers and that it is very much aligned with the 60s. Admixtures and influences of the Kinks, Led Zeppelin and the Animals can also be seen. He states that he sees this band as a balance to his work with the Heartbreakers and an opportunity for self-realization.

“It's something I probably should have done a long time ago, but it never came about because I was busy with the Heartbreakers. A bit of Dirty Knobs material has already been recorded and a lot of other tracks are about to be finalized, but they [Dirty Knobs] are not looking for a contract, they are confident that they can play a few gigs here and there in clubs around Los Angeles. "

Equipment & technology

Campbell is known for his excellent slide game. Apart from that, his guitar work is very much characterized by rhythmic piecework. In addition, Campbell occasionally plays surf music. To do this, he plays a Fender Jaguar guitar, which was otherwise rarely used by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers . There Campbell mainly played Rickenbacker guitars as well as a Duesenberg DMC Mike Campbell model specially designed for him .

In 2011, Rolling Stone listed Campbell 79th of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
