Mudcrutch is a rock band from Gainesville , Florida that formed Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 1976 .
Band history
Mudcrutch was formed in 1970, but the band had previously played with the same line-up under various other names. Founding member Leadon left the band after an unsuccessful single in 1972 and was replaced by Danny Roberts. In the same year the keyboardist Benmont Tench joined them. For several years Mudcrutch was the "house band" at "Dub's Diner" in Gainesville.
In 1974 Mudcrutch got another record deal. The band moved to Los Angeles and released the single Depot Street the following year on Shelter Records . However, this could not place itself in the charts, whereupon the band broke up. Petty, Campbell and Tench stayed together and founded the band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1976, which has since become globally successful.
Reunion
In August 2007 the founding members met and recorded their first album together. This was released on April 29, 2008 and entered the Billboard album charts at position 8. A second album followed, which was released in 2016 under the title 2 . A short US tour followed for both albums.
