Jon Villars (born 1963 in Panama City , Florida ) is an American opera singer specializing in hero tenor .

life and work

After graduating from the Juilliard School , Villars won a number of competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera in 1995 . Since then he has appeared several times at renowned festivals such as the Helsinki Festival , the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , the Salzburg Festival or the Tanglewood Festival and in major opera houses and concert halls around the world. He has sung under the direction of well-known conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Vladimir Ashkenazy , Pierre Boulez , Sylvain Cambreling , Riccardo Chailly , Bernard Haitink , Kurt Masur , Kent Nagano , Leonard Slatkin and Michael Tilson Thomas .

At the Salzburg Festival he was already heard as drum major in Wozzeck in 1997 and as Enée in Les Troyens in 2000 . In 2003 he was the Florestan in Fidelio at the Salzburg Easter Festival , conducted by Simon Rattle . He also played the title roles in Massenet's Werther and Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex .

In the Italian subject, he was successful as Kalaf in Puccini's Turandot - including in Canada, San Francisco, Cincinnati and Lisbon - and as Rodolfo in La Bohème .

Due to its voluminous voice, Villars is predestined for orchestral songs, symphonies and orchestral masses.
