Jeffrey Tate

Sir Jeffrey Tate (born April 28, 1943 in Salisbury , England , † June 2, 2017 in Bergamo , Italy ) was a British medic and conductor .

Life

Despite congenital disabilities such as spina bifida and kyphosis, Tate studied medicine at the University of Cambridge from 1961 to 1964 and became a specialist in ophthalmology . Tate then worked as an eye surgeon at St Thomas' Hospital in London. He later gave up his clinical career and studied music at the London Opera Center. He began his musical career as assistant to Herbert von Karajan in Salzburg and James Levine at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1976 he was Pierre Boulez's assistant at the Bayreuth ' Jahrhundertring '.

Jeffrey Tate has conducted a broad repertoire at opera houses and festivals with a focus on the works of Strauss , Mozart , Wagner and French operas. Jeffrey Tate was chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra . He has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Cleveland Orchestra , the Orchester de la Suisse Romande , the English Chamber Orchestra , the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchester National de France .

In his last concerts on May 30 and 31, 2017, he conducted Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony with the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento and the students of both cities.

Tate had been married to the German geomorphologist Klaus Kuhlemann since 2010 and lived in Detmold .

Awards and honors

In 1998/99 he received the Premio Abbiati . Tate was awarded a Knight Bachelor's degree for services to British music overseas at the traditional British New Year's Honors 2017 . Tate was also Commander of Order of the British Empire , Commandeur, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur .
