St Thomas' Hospital
St Thomas' Hospital is a large NHS - Hospital in London district of Lambeth . The operator is Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust , which also runs Guy's Hospital . The hospital has offered its services free of charge since the 12th century. It used to be located in Southwark . From 1860 to 1991 St Thomas' Hospital was the training hospital of the Nightingale School of Nursing , a nursing school founded by Florence Nightingale .
history
The hospital was mentioned as early as 1215 and was named after Thomas Becket . Hence, it can be assumed that it was founded after Becket's canonization in 1173. But it is also possible that it was only renamed at the time and was actually founded by Mary Overie in 1106 in Southwark .
Today's St Thomas' Hospital is in Stangate, Lambeth, London. It is on the Thames directly across from the Palace of Westminster .
