Sir Colin Rex Davis , CH , CBE (born September 25, 1927 in Weybridge , † April 14, 2013 in London ) was an English conductor .

Life

Colin Davis first studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music in London , but then became a conductor. In 1957 he became conductor of the BBC Scottish Orchestra , 1961–1965 of Sadler's Wells Opera (later English National Opera ). In 1967 he became chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra .

From 1971 to 1986 Davis was music director of the Royal Opera House , where he later worked as a guest conductor. 1977 and 1978 he conducted at the Bayreuth Festival to Tannhäuser , directed by Götz Friedrich .

From 1983 to 1992 Davis directed the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , which awarded him the Karl Amadeus Hartmann Medal in 1993 . In 1994 he conducted the choir and orchestra of the Munich University of Music in a concert performance of the Magic Flute , a. a. with Jonas Kaufmann as Tamino. From 1995 to 2007 he was chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra , and from 1998 to 2003 guest conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra .

Davis worked with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden from 1981 to 2013 . This led to a lifelong honorary conductor in 1990 and a memorial concert on May 9, 2013.

In addition to his interpretations of Mozart's work, Sir Colin stood out for his recordings of the works of Hector Berlioz and Jean Sibelius . He also conducted several world premieres of works by the contemporary British composer Michael Tippett .
